Why You Should Use Winter Air Conditioning

The term air conditioning makes people immediately think of a system to cool you down in the heat of the summer or in hot climates. Many could not think why anyone would use winter air conditioning. What many people do not realise is that air conditioning is a term for a heating and cooling system that can be used all year round. Winter air conditioning does not mean freezing air is blasted into the home, rather that the air conditioning operates in a reverse cycle to warm the air. In fact, winter air conditioning is one of the most affordable and economical heating systems you can choose for your home.

Winter Air Conditioning Benefits

Air conditioning offers many benefits but one that is particularly relevant during the wintertime is the air filtration system. Winter is a time when people spend a lot of time indoors in close confinement with other people especially around the Christmas holiday periods. Air conditioning helps by keeping the air in the home fresh and free from dust particles and other pollutants and can even help to control germs spreading. Ideal for allergy sufferers, your pets will no longer be making your guests sneeze or dabbing at their watering eyes.

Installation

Installing air conditioning in the wintertime means you will not be under any pressure with the installation as can often be the case towards summer, when air conditioning servicing is busy and people scrabble to get systems installed to cope with the hot weather. You will not only be luxuriating in perfect warmth, you will be able to look forward to the summer time knowing there will be no more nights of tossing and turning in a stuffy overheated bedroom or feeling sluggish when trying to get on with jobs or in your home office during the warmer times of the year

Offices and Retail Spaces

It is not just homes that benefit from an air conditioning system to use all year round. All types of offices and retail spaces can benefit too. Research shows that with good quality air conditioning systems, productivity and efficiency improve. Workers also demonstrate better performance. Clearly apart from the other benefits, winter air conditioning to keep employees warm is every bit as important as keeping them cool in summer time.

Air Conditioning Types

There are several air conditioning solutions in the market. For home summer and winter air conditioning there are different kinds of systems such as split ceiling and floor systems, ceiling only, multi split inverter, wall mounted inverter, plasma clean inverter. The different types of air conditioning systems ensure there is one to suit your budget and your environment. Many air conditioning units can be integrated into your home to look like a painting on the wall or can be discretely hidden behind an interior design grille in a cupboard. Practicality and good looks are the hallmark of air conditioning systems these days.

Winter air conditioning is also necessary for conservatories and sun lounges. A simple stand-alone air conditioning unit can make your conservatory a wonderful place to enjoy winter afternoons and as a bonus will keep you cool, when your conservatory gets hot during summer days. Think of the benefits of keeping an ambient temperature in your conservatory. It means you have extra space to do as you please making full use of this expensive addition to your home, simply by adding some winter air conditioning.

There are many features that make winter air conditioning systems a good investment.

  • 1. Quiet operation. These systems are very quiet so there are no noise disturbances or annoying background noises.
  • 2. The desired temperature is reached quickly and efficiently saving on energy costs. Instant operation means you have control at the push of a button.
  • 3. Energy savings. Air conditioning systems consume less energy and are improving in energy efficiency all the time. There is a relatively short payback period and you will enjoy seeing your electricity bills reduce.

The largest concern for a lot of people is the cost to acquire a suitable winter air conditioning system. The benefits of these systems mean they outweigh the initial costs and save over the long term in energy bills. We have air conditioning systems to suit all homes, offices and budgets and can show you what we have available and will discuss the best option for your installation.

How we got here

Air conditioning is known to have been applied in Ancient Rome: aqueduct water was passed through walls of houses to cool them. In medieval Persia similar techniques involving the use of cisterns and wind towers were used in the hot season to cool buildings.

Modern air conditioning emerged after advances in 19th Century chemistry, and it was Willis Haviland Carrier who invented and first used a large-scale electrical air conditioning system in 1902.

Air Conditioner Definition

An appliance, unit, system, or machine designed to stabilise the temperature and humidity of air within an area (used for both heating as well as cooling). A refrigeration cycle is the most common method of achieving this although sometimes evaporative coolers are used for comfort cooling inside buildings and vehicles.

What is the Best Heater for a Conservatory?

The internet as we know is a marvellous source of information and there is much to learn from the vast mass of knowledge. Unfortunately, a lot of information can be misleading and we fear many people have been led to the wrong solution for a problem for which they are trying to obtain an answer. Our company of professional heating engineers have a mission to provide first-class accurate information based on years of experience and training. However, many people answering queries on the internet are giving out misleading and sometimes dangerous information.

Take this example we found on Yahoo Answers:

As can be seen a straightforward question was posed by someone wanting to heat a conservatory cheaply and safely as the space was to be used as a children’s playroom and heating was only needed for part of the day. The requirement was that the appliance be energy saving, but they were not sure what would suit them having limited knowledge of heating methods.

We were surprised by the answer that was chosen as the best by voters:

“Best Answer- Chosen by Voters
get your self a halogen heater there cheep and very good”

It is true that halogen heaters are popular and can be simply plugged into a socket. They provide heat and are best suited to supplementing a full heating system. They come in different sizes and vary in style. Rather than electric coils to provide heat, halogen elements are used. They do have a safety cut out mechanism if they are toppled over, but for a conservatory made of glass, a halogen heater would not be powerful enough to provide a constant temperature.

They are ideally suited for a bedroom to take the chill off or as a heat source to keep toes warm under a desk or such like. There is usually a heat setting control and they are readily available from most retail outlets.

Why is a Halogen Heater Not Suited to The Use of This Conservatory?

Safety – Young children will be playing in the conservatory and could easily burn themselves or knock over the heater.

Performance – Because a conservatory is made of glass, the air becomes very cold and requires a decent output of warmth from the chosen heating appliance. Halogen heaters are not sufficient to warm the entire space, as they are more suited to “spot” heating. Heat is lost very quickly from a conservatory so using an appliance that can maintain a constant temperature will be more economic to run and save on energy. Very often cheaper halogen heaters have a short life and break down.

Appearance – Halogen heaters can look obtrusive and if you are after a streamlined integrated appliance, then a stand-alone heater is not the choice for you.

What Kind of Heating Appliance Would Suit This Conservatory?

The ideal choice for a conservatory is a small air conditioning unit. These units are discrete and can fit in the conservatory snugly at floor level, ceiling level or mounted on a wall. Using external air as the fuel source, this quiet appliance will quickly bring the temperature of the conservatory up to the required comfort level and maintain the level of comfort economically and safely.

The heat is instant and the unit can be controlled easily giving out four times as much energy for every unit of electricity you use. There is also the safety factor. An air conditioning unit is fixed in place and its construction mean there are no elements that can be reached by little fingers and no eat source that can burn or injure a child. All you get is all round warmth at the temperature you desire.

Benefits of a Conservatory Air Conditioning Unit

Safety – Children are safe with this form of heating as they cannot touch anything or injure themselves.

Performance – Gain up to four times as much energy from each unit of electricity. Modern air conditioning units are almost 100% energy efficient and yield great savings on the electricity bill. They are easily controlled and not dependent on any other system in the house.

Cooling – Just as it is lovely for children to be able to play in a warm conservatory, it is also a place of refuge during extremely hot summer days, as the children can stay cool when they are not bouncing around in a paddling pool as the small conservatory air conditioning units also cool the conservatory in the hot weather.

The dual purpose nature of a conservatory air conditioning unit combined with safety, long manufacturers warranty and guaranteed installation work means you will have peace of mind for many years to come and be able to take full advantage of your conservatory without worrying the children may trip over a floor standing heater or burn themselves.

When you are considering a conservatory heater, look to the internet but make sure you seek advice from the website of a professional air conditioning engineer.

Conservatory Air Conditioning London

Conservatory air conditioning in LondonWhether you call it a conservatory or an orangery, it is one thing to construct and design the conservatory of your dreams, but quite another to keep the ambient temperature cool enough in summer and warm enough in winter. Conservatory air conditioning London can walk you through the options to heat and cool your space. Conservatories can be very expensive in design and construction, but even if they are more modest, it is important that they can be used all year round.

A company like ours that covers conservatory air conditioning London is ideal for you to obtain the best advice from professional engineers in your area. A conservatory is used for many different purposes and we can advise on the best heating and cooling solution depending on your needs.

Without any kind of temperature control, your conservatory will have extremes of temperature meaning the space will not be a comfortable place to spend time. For example, on hot days, it will be too hot to use and on cold days it will be freezing. Having invested in your unique conservatory, you do not want the weather to dictate when it can be used.

You may have had your conservatory built to use as a home office, playroom, dining room, kitchen overflow area or simply as a place to relax and enjoy and possibly to grow to some beautiful house plants too. Conservatory air conditioning London is as important as your conservatory construction.

There are various options for heating and cooling your conservatory and some conservatory builders will even supply a small air conditioning unit with the deal but without proper heat calculations, you will never achieve the right type of temperate control. Air conditioning from an accredited company that covers conservatory air conditioning London is your port of call for the right product at the right price. Our own company has an extensive range of units to air condition your conservatory supplying just the right warmth in winter and perfect cooling in summer.

What Makes Air Conditioning the Best Option for Conservatory Heating and Cooling?

The largest amount of material used in a conservatory is glass and this is one reason that conservatories cool very quickly as almost eight times as quickly as a conventional room. This happens very quickly at sunset and of course, winter mornings will be extremely cold after the heat loss overnight. While there are many heating options available not all are suited to conservatory heating. One key factor for heating a conservatory is the amount of time it takes to bring the room to temperature. The other important factor is the amount of energy that is consumed to bring the temperature up to the required level.

In summer, sun penetrates the space raising internal temperatures to quite uncomfortable levels at times, which is not good for people or plants.

Often there are limitations on heating and cooling as some conservatories have floor to ceiling glass making them unsuitable for radiators and other wall mounted appliances. The versatility of air conditioning units means whatever you construction type; there is a unit to suit. For maximum efficiency and performance qualified engineers, calculate the unit size. They will come up with a recommendation depending on the construction of the building, size and other variables.

How Does Air Conditioning Heat a Conservatory?

Conservatory air conditioning London companies like Simply Air Conditioning use units with heat pump technology. These highly efficient air conditioning units make an excellent heating choice because they use heat pump technology to pull warm outside air in through the unit directing it into the conservatory, heating the air further to give instant warmth in your conservatory. The reverse process of drawing internal warm air from the conservatory to outside cools the air in the space. The heat pump technology works efficiently even on the coldest days to keep you cosy and your conservatory useable.

Domestic Air Conditioning

Domestic air conditioning is something we tend to think about when the weather is hot or when we are using it in an apartment or villa abroad. However, it is a misconception that many people have that air-conditioning is just for cooling purposes. On the contrary, domestic air conditioning systems can be used for heating purposes as well. The beauty of air conditioning is that you can cherry pick from the wide range of systems and individual units to suit your home.

Many people are beginning to realise that air conditioning is a viable alternative to other kinds of heating systems because of the energy efficiency and value for money operation. Individual air conditioning units are also ideal for awkward areas in the home where there may not be space to install a radiator or other type of heating appliance. The slim line ceiling mounted units available are discrete and will probably cost you less money to run than any other kind of appliance. Units of this type can be operated by timer so you are in control. It is also good to know that at the flick of the switch, you have cooling at your fingertips.

In the UK we have a temperate climate and although we often suffer with extremes, think boiling summers and freezing winters, the rest of the time we do not have weeks of minus zero temperatures or 30 degrees every day. As a result we are somewhat set in our ways when it comes to thinking about home comfort. Domestic air conditioning is a viable alternative for a whole house, a few rooms, or an individual space in the home.

Here we look at some considerations if you are considering a new heating and ventilation system for your house.

What You Need To Know

Obviously, like a conventional heating system with a boiler and radiators, a domestic central heating installation is a professional job. We make it our mission to assess your personal requirements and install a system that is perfect for you and your home. Many factors add up to the price of your system, such as: the age and type of your home, make and model of units, regulations and how much building work and making good is required. This can be kept to a minimum with our ductless systems.

We also calculate the optimum size unit for maximum energy efficiency and take into account air quality and the type of filtration required. It is always worth seeing if there are any grants available if you are upgrading or replacing your system. We will advise of any grants available to you. Replacing or installing a whole system is a decision that you need to take time over but you also need to consider the savings you will make on current energy costs and efficiency

Data Loggers for Air Quality

Data loggers are electronic instruments that record different kinds of data. They are often small machines run on battery power. The applications are used for measuring many kinds of things but are commonly used in air conditioning systems to measure energy efficiency, air quality, and temperature. The good thing about these devices is that information is recorded 24/7 and have the capacity to record data for any months before requiring a battery change.

Important data can be key to understanding why a system has an intermittent fault or air quality is poor. Data loggers are useful diagnostic tools and can sometimes get to the root of a problem that is not obvious using normal engineering processes. The majority of these devices use a personal computer to utilise the logger and look at the data collected.

There are two ways to capture data; one is data logging and the other data acquisition. Data loggers are stand-alone devices whereas the data acquisition device needs a personal computer connection to transmit data for analysis

The data loggers used on most AC systems have a large data memory to allow for many months of data capture. Data loggers are quite sophisticated and calibrated to within miniscule tolerances allowing accurate information to be interpreted. Data loggers can also be alarmed to draw notice to critical events in the air conditioning system. Some of the latest data loggers can be analysed via the internet because they are wireless, meaning any alerts can be monitored remotely

Data logger manufacturers are making the data more compatible with standard software so that regular Windows programs can use the data captured for analysis. This is of major advantage to building managers for example who may be monitoring different systems.

While data loggers are not essential equipment, they can be of great assistance when things are not quite right with an air conditioning system. By monitoring airflow, humidity, air quality, and temperature, they can assist in diagnosing problems as well as providing statistics on usage and efficiency.

Data loggers are used in a vast array of different industries and processes and we think these little devices are a definite plus for the future as they become more accessible and sophisticated.

In the meantime, you can rest assured that our qualified accredited air conditioning engineers are the best in town and you can rely on them to attend to all your air quality needs.

Air Conditioning Rat Rage Aboard Train!

We doubt that an incident of this kind would happen on British Rail but you never know! We are grateful to The Times of India for this story of a pack of rogue rats that not only disabled the air conditioning on a train but also then proceeded to attack the passengers and railway train operatives. The incident happened before a journey and caused huge disruption to the train and the railway schedules. We are not fond of rats at the best of times and would not be keen to find them in any of our air conditioning systems! The story unfolds thus:

“BAHRAICH: Rats caused massive problems to people on the Rapti Sagar Express on Sunday September 12th 2012. The train was going to Thiruvananthapuram from Gorakhpur. The rodents cut the wiring of the air conditioning in one of the coaches of the train leading to an inconvenience for several passengers. The rats also injured some people and caused delays in the train’s scheduled departure.

On information given by the railway coach conductor and passengers, the railways personnel reached the train but failed to catch the rats. The passengers who were injured were given primary treatment at the Gonda railway station and finally the train departed. Area manager of the railway Nyaymurti told the Times of India that wiring in the AC coach was repaired.

Passengers said that the rats first cut the AC wiring and then attacked several passengers. One passenger, RK Srivastava, resident of Chhapra, Bihar, travelling to Coimbato said the staff on the train were informed about passengers, including Rakesh, Ramesh, Imran and Seema, besides himself, getting bitten. The coach attendant informed the Basti Railway station about the incident but the stationmaster did not take the call and the train departed from there without anyone attending to the problem. Once the train reached Gonda, a team of the railway hospital medics reached the affected railway coach and administered medical aid to the injured.”

Some of the stories we hear about are amazing and it is extraordinary how truth always seems to outdo fiction, you really could not make things like this up. Maybe Hollywood or more likely Bollywood could make a feature film a la Hitchcock’s “The Birds” called “The Rats” featuring huge Bollywood sound stage song and dance numbers featuring the passengers escaping the rats!

Joking aside, it is important to have air conditioning systems regularly maintained to ensure there is no damage to wiring and this is carried out in periodic maintenance checks. We offer very reasonable packages and if you have an inverter system, a check up before deep winter is essential to make sure you will be kept warm throughout the cold season.

Why not call us today for a chat to book your winter maintenance check.

Wi-Fi Air Conditioning

It was not that long ago when people marvelled at the gadgets that James Bond used in the famous Bond movies and they could not conceive of such far-fetched options being available in every day life. Technology is moving at such an incredibly fast pace and new options to make life easier are being revealed every day.

Today’s techno gadget lovers would find it laughable that only 30 or so years ago computers were restricted to vast air conditioned rooms because they were so delicate despite their equally vast size. The early big (usually blue) dull large rectangular boxes that were the computers of the day had only 16K of memory to process a computer program. Data was fed in via tape decks, punched cards, or from large disk drives. The card reader we know today originates from when large decks of punched cardboard cards held the instructions to run computer programs. When a phone now has the processing power to run a small financial corporation, you can see how quickly technology has evolved.

In the world of air conditioning, an innovation from Samsung has heralded in the dawn of Wi-Fi appliances introducing home automation control without wiring or hefty price tags.

This new technology for a range of Samsung Wi-Fi air conditioners is based on the facts that it simply does not make sense to go home to an over heated house in summer when you have an air conditioning system. There have always been air conditioning timers to set to come on at specific times, but they tend to be complicated and people forget to reset them when their circumstances change causing wasted energy.

Samsung’s new range of air conditioners allow you to control them through your smart phone or tablet with touch friendly, clever apps. This allows the user to control the A/C with a device with which they are already familiar. By downloading Samsung’s Smart Air Conditioner app, consumers can turn the air conditioner on or off, select the mode, set the temperature, and even set a time clock from wherever they are—as long as they have access to 3G or Wi-Fi. The App is available on Android and iOS.

The new Samsung air conditioning range features various intuitive modes designed for comfort, including the D’Light Cool Mode and Good Sleep Mode II. The D’Light Cool Mode function assesses the temperature and humidity of a room and, if required, will modify them, while the Good Sleep Mode gradually lowers the temperature as you fall asleep and alters it again as you wake up.

The Wi-Fi control is a feature that many people will find useful. For consumers in the UK, this is a feature to look forward to especially for those who have A/C systems that provide heating in winter as well. As we all know, the UK can give you four seasons in one day and often we switch the heating on manually when the temperature drops outside of the heating season. To be able to switch on the heating before you leave work or return home from shopping means you will return home to a warm, cosy welcome!

Cost of a Central Heating Installation

The cost of a central heating installation is an obvious consideration for anyone who needs to upgrade or install a central heating system from scratch. Costs are not always straightforward, but we always endeavour to give you a quotation that is accurate and covers all equipment and labour costs.

The UK central heating market is made up of so many different combinations and types of heating systems and houses, that even giving an approximation is difficult. Firstly, there are many different sources of fuel such as natural gas, oil, LPG (liquid petroleum gas) and electricity.

All fuel types have their advantages and disadvantages and may not be freely available to all houses and locations. Very rural areas for example may not be able to take advantage of natural gas, as there is not a supply. Given the different variables, we have come up with some costs to use as a starting point when considering your new heating system.

Natural Gas

Natural Gas boilers are the most popular in the UK and are available in three different types: combi, regular, and system.

The cheapest boiler to install is a combination. A combi boiler heats hot water on demand and does not require a storage tank in the loft or a hot water tank in an the airing cupboard. The simpler installation of this type of boiler results in reduced labour costs with the usual price ranging from £1,500 to £3,000 for a 1-3 bed property.

For larger properties with more bedrooms and bath rooms the cost increases. A regular boiler or system boiler, which stores hot water, allows for a greater supply of hot water when needed. An example would be if two shower rooms being used at the same time. More complex pipe work will increase costs for this type of property and a typical installation will be £2,500 – £5,000 depending on what is included.

LPG

Many modern boilers can be converted to LPG, which can be a good alternative if you live in a rural area not connected to mains natural gas; an LPG installation is typically more expensive than a standard natural gas system due to the provision of a gas storage tank.

The cost of a Calor LPG tank can be as little as £150 with yearly rental on top of that; however, this will include all the required maintenance and insurance. Taking into account the increased boiler cost and additional tank installation, an LPG central heating installation can cost anything from £2,500 – £6,000 depending on the size of property. Ongoing running costs are higher than natural mains gas but lower than oil.

Heating Oil

Oil boilers are expensive, but extremely efficient. The best of oil boilers are 97% efficient compared to the best natural gas boilers, which are 91.3% efficient. Installation costs are slightly higher as an oil tank is required. Tanks will add £800-900 to the cost. Oil boilers like all boilers need regular servicing. The price for an oil central heating installation is £3,500 – £8,000 depending on requirements.

Air Conditioning Filter Maintenance

Air Conditioning Filters are one of the most critical components of an air conditioning unit and need to be maintained on a regular basis to keep your air conditioning system working efficiently.

In fact, the single most important thing you can do to keep your air conditioning system working efficiently is to make sure the air conditioning filter is the correct one for your particular unit and it is clean. Air filters also provide other benefits such as cleaner air and reduced allergy symptoms.

The original purpose of the air conditioning filter was to keep the air conditioning components clean. The resulting clean air was just a fringe benefit! Nowadays, clean air to breathe is the objective of air conditioning systems and more attention is given to filters of different kinds for this purpose.

A dirty air conditioning filter or a filter that is too small and does not fit the air conditioning system properly can have many negative effects:

  • Increased blower power consumption.
  • Reduced cooling or heating.
  • Compressor Failure.
  • Higher running cost and shorter equipment life.
  •

Regular maintenance of air conditioning systems therefore is vital to ensure a continually high performance of the system is delivered.
