Heat Pumps

We are often asked about various component parts of an air conditioning system and do our best to explain to our customers why each part is so important to the system. Heat pumps are one important component of any air conditioning system but also have an added extra enabling cooling and heating, making them a versatile and welcome piece of electronics.

A heat pump is an air conditioner that contains a valve that lets you decide whether you want heat or cool air to circulate throughout your home. The heat pump valve can be adjusted based on your specific needs – providing you with a cool breeze or reversing its flow of Freon, located in the air conditioning refrigerant, and delivering warm air to the room.

Heat pumps are a cost-effective way to provide the very best in central air conditioning. Depending on climate and heating and air conditioning needs, the choice of heat pumps will vary in price. Less noisy components are usually more costly but deliver a quiet unobtrusive operation. A well-maintained heat pump system can last for years and allowing us to regularly maintain your air conditioning system and parts will mean efficient running too. Cleaning the air conditioning air filter at least once a month properly (some air conditioning systems now even have disposable air conditioning filters), having an annual air conditioning inspection with our air conditioning engineers and paying attention to the heat pump thermostat are all ways to make your heat pump air conditioner last.

If you are shopping around for a new heat pump thermostat, look for one that has a variety of features to deliver an overall performance that will give you the best in temperature control. There are two main types of heat pump thermostats and the options are based on preference. There are electro-mechanical and electronic heat pump thermostats, used for residential purposes. The electronic heat pump thermostats can provide any temperature and are entirely programmable, where you can set it to 60 degrees at night and then have it programmed to be at a comfortable 70 degrees when you wake up in the morning. Electro-mechanical thermostats contain a bi-metal coil or strip made of two different types of metals, which expand and contract at different rates. When this takes place, the coil or strip moves and connects to a device that will provide the electrical circuit. They are set at standard temperatures and you adjust them with a little switch to the appropriate temperature.

The heat pump clearly plays an important role to the air conditioning system whether this application is residential or commercial. Understanding this component is important for maintenance of your heating or cooling system. At Simply Air Conditioning London we are experienced in many different kinds of heat pumps and will be able to advise you on the one that is right for your application and provide a follow up maintenance plan to keep things efficient and delivering optimum performance for you.

How we got here

Air conditioning is known to have been applied in Ancient Rome: aqueduct water was passed through walls of houses to cool them. In medieval Persia similar techniques involving the use of cisterns and wind towers were used in the hot season to cool buildings.

Modern air conditioning emerged after advances in 19th Century chemistry, and it was Willis Haviland Carrier who invented and first used a large-scale electrical air conditioning system in 1902.

Air Conditioner Definition

An appliance, unit, system, or machine designed to stabilise the temperature and humidity of air within an area (used for both heating as well as cooling). A refrigeration cycle is the most common method of achieving this although sometimes evaporative coolers are used for comfort cooling inside buildings and vehicles.

Split Air Conditioning

Split air conditioning simply means that the condenser (or sometimes referred to as the “outdoor unit”) is separated from the “indoor unit”, hence the term “split”. Split air conditioning has at least one unit that sits inside the room being cooled. The compressor sits outside on wall brackets or the ground. Some types come with multiple indoor units that use a single compressor, known as the multi-split air conditioning.

All air conditioning design needs to calculate how many BTUs are needed for optimised cooling in the area. We have a calculation that will make this job easy and will take into account whether rooms are closed or open plan to maximise efficiency.

Split air conditioning works with a copper connection pipe and electrical wiring connecting the indoor unit to the outdoor unit. Gas refrigerant is pumped from the outdoor condenser coil and compressor through the connection pipe to the indoor unit or units. A fan then distributes cool air drawn across the unit’s evaporator coil.

In split air conditioning systems, a thermostat can control the amount of cold air entering the room or it can be regulated by an infrared remote control. Therefore, one room or one area of a building can maintain a different temperature from another room or area in the same building.

Split air conditioning systems are an ideal solution when spot cooling is required – for example, you may require the living room to be cooled during the day and the bedroom at night. Split air conditioning is also ideal for installation into existing buildings as the condenser can be placed outside the target area and connection pipes and wiring can be run into the room. Inside wall or ceiling units and cassettes then distribute the cooled air.

As no ductwork or air distribution system is needed with a split air conditioning system, these units can be installed almost anywhere. Homes, offices, shops, guesthouses, hotels, schools, equipment rooms, computer rooms, and laboratories are just some locations we have installed systems of this kind.

These systems are easily installed with the minimum of fuss and disruption. Split air conditioning is easily maintained with washable filters and a long time between periodic cleanings. Both the indoor and outdoor units are designed for quiet operation. Indoor units are typically quiet enough for libraries, classrooms, boardrooms, and bedrooms. Outdoor units are quiet enough to be installed without disruption to residents. The stylish indoor units blend into any décor style. With a reverse heating cycle for winter, these systems are ideal for any situation.

New Measures on HFCs

We learn today that the EU has been urged to take stronger action on the HFC family of greenhouse gases by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA).

The EIA argues that firm European regulation to cuts HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons) will send a strong signal to developing countries where their use is growing, but also help create a mass market for their replacement chemicals.

HFCs were developed to replace chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which were responsible for the hole in the ozone layer. They are thousands of times more potent than CO2 when it comes to warming the atmosphere but do have a far shorter lifespan.

HFC emissions are growing rather than reducing and by 2020, they could be 80% higher. It is estimated that the emission of HFCs is probably on a par with the aviation industry as a proportion of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. HFCs are used in air conditioning and refrigeration units. The industry is experiencing rapid growth as middle classes in developing countries emerge, and as temperate climates suffer increasingly extreme summer temperatures, expanding the air conditioning market.

Air conditioning sales in India and China are growing at 20% a year. The EU’s policy on HFCs is currently up for review and the EIA believes there is an opportunity to lead by example and begin an aggressive phase down of HFC use. Replacement chemicals already exist but face resistance from industry that would be left with the costs of any changeover. HFCs and other so-called short-lived climate forcers such as methane and soot have received increasing attention in recent years.

The US established a coalition of countries to deal with short-lived climate forcers in developing countries earlier this year. France, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Finland, Jordan, and the UK joined the Climate and Clean Air Initiative in July, bringing the total number of signed-up states to 21.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) predicts that slashing these emissions could delay climate change by up to three decades, avoid the annual loss of more than 30 million tons of crops, and prevent 2.4 million deaths – often from soot inhalation.

As a responsible company, we welcome any progress on greener initiatives in our industry and are happy to implement new measures and introduce new technology to our product range. Air conditioning is here to stay and plays a vital role in medicine, industry and science as well as being the most efficient form of all year round heating and cooling that a home can have.

Thieves Target Large Air Conditioning Units

The Irish Independent newspaper has recently reported that businesses in the UK and Ireland are suffering a spate of thefts of air conditioning units. Externally mounted units have been removed from the walls and rooftops of a number of business premises in recent weeks. Air-conditioning units contain copper and aluminium, which is being targeted by thieves because of the high scrap prices currently being paid.

Units considered large enough to yield profits are usually attached to businesses such as pubs, shops, restaurants and specialised warehousing. This type of unit is full of copper and aluminium as units contain a condenser with a copper tube, and evaporator with a series of copper zigzags. The pipes running between split units are copper which is very appealing to metal thieves.

The variety of larger air conditioning units are typical of those used at a big technology or pharmaceutical building. Air conditioning units of this kind could contain 40 or 50 pounds of copper. For the thieves it is a simple matter of disconnecting the electrics and the piping. It would need quite a bit of muscle power to lift it so it is likely a few people would be required to shift the spoils.

These air-conditioning units cost thousands for a business to replace, but the yield to thieves is minimal. Even with copper and aluminium priced as high as they are currently, the scrap value from one large unit might be as little as €30 or £25.

The theft of air conditioning is a major issue in the US but metal thieves in Ireland and the UK have only recently started targeting them. Thieves of this type previously concentrated on public statues and sculptures, gates, copper-roof flashing, and metal manhole covers.

For some businesses, these thefts have had a silver lining as many companies are looking to replace air conditioning systems to comply with new legislation and the thieves have saved them the trouble of disposing of the old units. Units take on average thirty minutes to steal if the metal thieves know what they are doing. In some cases, air conditioning units are being stolen even before they are installed! One wholesaler cites and incident where they delivered cooling evaporators to a client in a rural area which weighed more than one tonne each. The next day they had disappeared – the target of metal thieves.

There are security cages available for a few hundred pounds that may be installed around roof-mounted air- conditioning units but these are really designed to protect people from damage from the units rather than the other way around. However, some organisations are finding this is becoming an essential security measure combined with the health and safety aspects.

The only trouble is, the cages are made from metal as well so it is quite likely the thieves will be adding more to their loot and stealing the cages too!

Companies that have been targeted are stepping up their security systems, as replacement air conditioning systems are very costly.

AC Heat Pump Components

heat pumpHere is a simple explanation how an air conditioning system works and the major component parts. Often when you are considering purchasing air conditioning, it is difficult to know where to begin. We hope with our articles we are assisting you to gain knowledge and learn something more about equipment we take for granted yet these days could not live without if you consider the wider impact.

We have included heat pumps in this article too as combined systems are what many people opt for as they can have year round climate control. The function of each component is described:

  • 1. An air conditioning or heat pump compressor compresses low-pressure refrigerant gas into a high pressure, high temperature gas. Usually the compressor is in the outdoor portion of an air conditioning or heat pump system.
  • 2. The air conditioner or heat pump compressor unit is a high-pressure pump driven by an electric motor. The air conditioning compressor is packaged in the outdoor compressor/condenser unit.
  • 3. A condenser or condensing unit is typically a condensing coil inside which high temperature high-pressure refrigerant gas flows, and over which a fan blows air to cool the refrigerant gas back to a liquid state (thus transferring heat from the refrigerant gas to the air being blown by the fan). The condenser unit is a coil of finned tubing and a fan to blow air across the coil. Usually the condenser unit is in the outdoor portion of an air conditioning system, often packaged along with the compressor motor discussed above.
  • 4. The change of state of the refrigerant, from hot high-pressure gas to a liquid releases heat, including heat collected inside the building to the outside.
  • 5. A metering device, which dispenses liquid refrigerant into an evaporator coil. The metering device may be simply a thin section of tubing (a capillary or “cap” tube). It may also be a more sophisticated thermostatic expansion valve (TEV) which includes a temperature sensing control that can open and shut the device against refrigerant flow.
  • 6. An evaporator coil or cooling coil: Typically, the cooling coil is a section of finned tubing (it looks a lot like a car radiator) into which liquid refrigerant is metered and permitted to evaporate from liquid to gas state inside the coil. This state change of the refrigerant, from liquid to gas, absorbs heat, cooling the evaporator coil surface and thus cooling indoor air blown across the cooling coil. Usually the cooling coil is located inside the air handler.
  • 7. An air handler and blower unit, which provides a fan to blow building air across or through the evaporator coil. The air handler blower fan unit moves building air across the evaporator coil surface in order to condition building air by cooling it (and thus also by removing moisture from the cooled air).
  • 8. A duct system which distributes conditioned air from the air handler in to the occupied space (supply ducts), and which takes air from the occupied space and returns it to the cooling system air handler.

Heat Pump Systems use the same components described above, with the addition of a reversing valve that allows the system to run “backwards” in cold weather. Therefore, in air conditioning mode the heat pump is moving heat from inside the building to outdoors while in heating mode the heat pump is moving heat from outdoor air (or water in some designs) to the building interior.

Efficiency with annual maintenance

Air Conditioning maintenanceWhether you have just one air conditioner in your home or an entire central air cooling system, you will need a reliable contractor to help with cleaning, maintaining, and ensuring you are saving as much energy as possible when you are using your air conditioning system.

Cleaning and replacing your filters each month will help to maintain your air conditioning unit. HVAC maintenance also includes annual maintenance from a professional service to ensure your air conditioning unit’s equipment is up to par and is not leaking or causing an over usage of energy in your home. If you are not sure how to install and replace the filters in your air conditioner, you can refer to the user manual of your unit or call us in to assist you with the installation and replacement of the new filters your unit requires.

Before working with any professional service for your HVAC maintenance or even repairs, make a list of all of the concerns you have with your unit, including any questions regarding the air conditioners filters, output of energy, or even the programmed thermostat you are using to work the unit. Asking questions will allow you to get the answers you need when you are working with a certified professional.

To help yourself it is important to ensure your home is thoroughly insulated, including your loft space. Close off cracks under doors and within doorframes to help keep the air warm or cool air in your home, this will require less usage and use less electricity. You should also consider keeping your air conditioner set at one temperature as much as possible to reduce fluctuations in your electricity bills.

Set your home’s thermostat to an overall higher temperature when you are not at home or off at work for the day to save on energy use when you do not need the air conditioning. Also, opt for a programmable thermostat when you are trying to save money on your electric bill, as it will be a more accurate way to track your home’s temperature and the amount of energy you are using regularly.

Consider turning off your unit when the weather conditions permit. You can also save on energy usage by closing off specific ducts in your home to concentrate the air conditioning into specific locations. This will allow you to cool other rooms quicker, needing less air conditioning or allowing you to keep the air conditioner set a bit higher without feeling too hot or uncomfortable.

HVAC maintenance is important and adds to the reliability of your system as well as saving money. Call us today for details of our maintenance plans.

Split AC Units

Split air conditioning unitThe Split type air-conditioner is gaining popularity in residential situations over the window type because this type of air conditioner can be mounted easily anywhere even in rooms without windows. They are more discrete and have a low installation cost although the initial outlay can be higher than window units. There may be a small increase in power consumption in split AC units compared to the window type but overall the running cost is almost same for both air-conditioners with no difference in efficiency.

A split system has a condensing unit outside. This leads to a major advantage, as the noise level is low as the noisy part, the compressor, is kept outside. The evaporation panel remains within the building. These units are very slick looking and do not intrude on the living space. Interconnecting pipes are also external keeping the room aesthetics, as you want them. There are no structural changes or disruption with split AC units.

With a split air-conditioner, the indoor unit sucks air from the room and throws it back to the room after cooling and removing moisture from it, while the outdoor unit removes the heat to the atmosphere. In order to choose the right air conditioner, a couple of calculations are needed to establish the heat load of a given room. Body temperature is 99 degrees Fahrenheit (37 Celsius) so in order for comfort the temperature of the room should be between 70 to 79 degrees F (21 to 26 Celsius) with a relative humidity range of 20 to 50%.

An air conditioner’s heating or cooling capacities are rated by watts or kilowatts. Normally a room having two occupants carries away 50 British thermal units (BTUs) of heat per hour, per square foot of the room area. One Kilowatt is equivalent to 3400 BTUs per hour. This means for a 15 feet x 15 feet room size, an air-conditioner having a capacity of 11250 BTU (15 feet x 15 feet x 50 BTU/hour) will be required. With this, 600 BTU/hr for every person and 1000 BTU/hr for each appliance need to be added.

Concealed Air Conditioning Units

Simply Air Conditioning London are specialist in many types of AC units, including concealed air conditioning units. Have a look at the images of some of our concealed AC unit work below and read the following article to find out more about concealed air conditioning.

Concealed Air conditioning units installed by Simply Air Conditioning London 7Air conditioning units are not known for their beauty although there are different models that are discrete and suitable when aesthetics are important. One way of keeping cool and disguising air conditioning units is to use concealed units that are incorporated into home furnishings, in suspended ceilings, kitchen units, and plinths of different sorts. There are many styles offering different performance specifications and most air conditioning specialists will offer a variety of options to suit your particular requirements.

If you are renovating or designing a kitchen from scratch and think you may require air conditioning, research the options and incorporate a concealed air conditioning unit into the design. It is far easier to design the feature in at the beginning of the project than as an afterthought.

Concealed Air conditioning units installed by Simply Air Conditioning London 6Most concealed air conditioning systems are ducted with slim units installed within the ceiling. Barely noticeable, the suction and discharge grilles are visible although very often the grilles can be matched to the ceiling colour. This type of application blends unobtrusively in any interior design, leaving maximum floor and wall space for furniture, decoration and fittings. Concealed ceiling air conditioning provides ideal air distribution through the use of ducting and multiple grilles that are unobtrusive.

Most of the major manufacturers offer an ultra thin air conditioning unit, which offers increased flexibility and is particularly suitable for places where low noise operation is desired from a slim line body. This unit is concealed within the ceiling space or a false space or furnishing to allow unobtrusive air conditioning. Flexibility of duct layout allows airflow patterns to be arranged to suit any application.

Concealed Air conditioning units installed by Simply Air Conditioning London 5We recommend discreet air conditioning systems that also have low noise levels for optimum concealment. For one off air conditioning in a single room we can supply ductless solutions that use low energy with minimal visual and noise impact .the Mitsubishi’s mini-split (or ductless) technology is ideal for situations where low energy usage is important with little visual or noise impact.

Concealed air conditioning units can be installed in such a way that they are only on view when in use. For example, an overhead locker in a kitchen or bedroom can be lifted to expose the air conditioning unit for operation.

We are able to offer you a customised design service based on aesthetic values making sure you have a concealed air conditioning system that is low noise, efficient and reliable for your home or office. This service includes a full building survey to define the heat gain from external sources and internal heat sources such as lights, computers, dishwashers, ovens and other appliances in our heat load calculations.

Tips for Conserving Energy and Money with your Air Conditioning System

Energy Efficiency in Air ConditioningBetween 50-70% of a home’s energy is used on heating and cooling. While a good portion of this effort goes toward heating water for dishes, clothes, and showers, regulating a home’s temperature eats up much of the energy bill. There are ways to minimise your costs by following a few simple practices.

When you are looking to install a heating or cooling system, look out for product features designed to save you money from the beginning. We are able to advise you completely obligation free on the best systems for your circumstances and budget.

Programmable Thermostats

Programmable thermostats have the quickest return on invest, sometimes as fast as two months. These particular devices allow you to set the thermostat to raise or lower the temperature when you leave the house, then adjust the temperature again just before you walk back through the door. This product will keep you from heating or air conditioning your home unnecessarily while you are away from home or asleep. This will result in great cost savings

Energy Efficient HVAC Units

The energy star rating ensures that the product will perform above a certain efficiency standard, thus guaranteeing energy savings. The energy cost savings can be at least 20% with units of this type.

[button link=”http://simplyairconditioninglondon.co.uk” style=”info”]Simply Air Conditioning London are your HVAC experts when it comes to saving money and energy[/button]

There are tips to save money and use less energy with your heating and air conditioning systems and we have put a few of them together here

  • Install door brushes on all entry and exit doors. This will significantly reduce or even stop any free airflow under the bottoms of doors.
  • Upgrade your home insulation. It will give a great return on investment, especially if there are areas in your home that have no insulation at all, such as in basements or lofts. There are local authority grants for insulation if you qualify which is worth looking into.
  • Close off areas of your house that you do not use regularly. This is a sensible way to control energy usage. Close vents and doors to rooms that are infrequently used, as there is no sense heating or cooling a portion of the home that you do not use.
  • In hot conditions, do not run dishwashers or clothes dryers during the hottest parts of the day, as your air conditioning unit will have to work overtime to bring the temperature back down to level. You can reverse this principle in wintertime to conserve heat, as the operation of these appliances will generate a certain amount of heat.
  • Turn the heat down when you leave the house during the day. The few minutes of cold that you will have to bear when you return home are worth the 8+ hour savings in your daily heating bill.
  • In the summer, pick the same temperature or even turn air conditioning off when you leave to save energy and money.

Quote from one of our happy air deflector free trial recipients:

“Our open plan office houses around 100 people. Air distribution and draft was an issue for some of them prior to fitting air deflectors. Since the fitting we’ve not had a single complaint!”
