Seawater Air Conditioning

At Simply Air conditioning London we’re always interested in new innovations that help make a greener planet, while new advances in technology really excite us. That’s why we were interested in the new Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning project, which is utilising piped seawater in an effort to cut down on energy usage in downtown Honolulu. The project will cost some $250 million.

The system will use a thick pipe about five feet across placed, in the deep water about four miles offshore. It will be able to stand up to deployment stresses and withstand the largest storm surf and hurricane waves throughout its lifetime.

The pipe will be in water close to 2000 feet deep. Cold water is sucked up and transported via the pipe into a system that feeds the downtown area.

Sea Water Air Conditioning (SWAC) takes advantage of available deep cold seawater to replace energy-intensive central refrigeration systems that cool chilled water to provide air conditioning in one or more buildings. Such a system can also utilise cold lakes or river water as the cold source.

The cold from the seawater is transferred to a separate loop filled with freshwater. Freshwater is then pumped to individual buildings. The water will be pumped back via a cooling plant and through a heat exchanger returning the seawater back to the ocean. The water, at this stage around 10 degrees warmer, will dissipate quickly to minimise impact on marine life.

“Clean, cool, and green” is how Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning describes the technology.

Seawater air conditioning systems tap into a significant and highly valuable natural energy resource available at many coastal points. The potential benefit of using colder seawater or lake water for air conditioning include:

  • Large energy savings approaching 90%
  • Proven technology
  • Short economic payback period
  • Positive environmental attributes
  • Costs are almost independent of any future price increases in energy
  • No evaporative water consumption
  • There is availability of cold sea water for other applications

The Honolulu plan calls for driving about 100 piles about a quarter to a half mile offshore. The piles will secure the pipes to the floor in a surf zone where the pipe is subject to movement. Marine life could be impacted by vibration, but marine life, like dolphins and whales will be monitored by marine mammal experts and scientists that the Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning will have on board at all stages of the project.

While the amount of seawater that can be taken from the ocean is limited, there is still capacity to power forty large sized buildings in the downtown area. The energy savings that will result as the outcome of this project, brings hope to advancement of more eco friendly methods of energy usage. Although the investment is substantial, the long-term benefits may be worthwhile.

Although it’s only possible in certain areas of the world, it is great to see the seawater air conditioning innovation being utilised where possible and we hope to see many more similar innovations in air conditioning and the world in general to help us push towards a greener planet.

Three Key Signs of Imminent Air Conditioning Breakdown

Air Conditioning Breakdown RepairAir conditioning systems are a blessing to any household and while we may not suffer sultry tropical weather here in the UK, we have enough extremes in temperature that any air conditioning systems we use in our homes for heating and cooling will be working hard. Unfortunately, air conditioning systems do sometimes need attention so it is useful to know what to look out for before an air conditioning breakdown. Older air conditioning systems sometimes fail without any warning, but in most cases, you will know if you are heading towards an air conditioning breakdown. Many reasons and common problems cause air conditioning breakdown such as refrigerant leaks, controller failures, and frozen coils.

In this article, we look at three signs your air conditioning is about to breakdown and take a brief look at some of the causes.

1) Air Conditioning System Takes Longer to Cool Your Home

If your air conditioning is taking a long time to cool your home to the desired temperature then it is usually a sign you are heading for air conditioning breakdown. It may be you are low on refrigerant or have a refrigerant leak or it could also mean pipe work is rusting or completely corroded which often points to a new system or upgrade.

2) Air Conditioning System Blows Slightly Warm Air

The airflow that comes from the air conditioning vents should be a constant temperature. If you are cooling, that temperature should be cold air and if you are heating, the air should be hot. A lukewarm airflow is not normal and can indicate that a filter needs changing inside the system. The air filter can get clogged and should be changed regularly. If you are fortunate, this will solve this issue but if not you are heading for air conditioning breakdown unfortunately.

3) Replacing the Air Conditioning Filters Does Not Resolve Temperature Problems

There is definitely a significant problem with the air conditioning system, possibly the blower fan, or another component.

At this stage it is time to call us in so that we can do a proper air conditioning inspection and diagnosis as if the methods you have tried to fix the system have failed then it is definitely an air conditioning breakdown that needs to be resolved by a professional.

Here we look at one or two problems that can cause the classic air conditioning breakdown:

Leaking Refrigerant

If the air conditioner is low on refrigerant, it can be because it was undercharged to begin with or the air conditioner is leaking. In the case of the leak, it will need to be properly repaired and tested by a professional engineer.

Sensor Problems

There is a thermostat behind the air conditioner control panel. This device measures air temperature before air enters evaporative coil. If the thermostat is damaged, this may cause erratic functioning of the air conditioner that may not regulate the system and cycle constantly

Electric Control Failure

Another cause of total failure, oversized systems may burn out because they are constantly switching on and off to regulate temperature, which ends up wearing out compressors and fan control systems. Ensure only a professional engineer carries out the calculations and recommendations of proper system size for your premises.

It is possible to provide some prevention by having us come and routinely maintain your system to pre-empt any problems before they begin. In the meantime, the three tips we have provided will make you aware of an impending air conditioning breakdown.

The New Daikin AC VRV IV – Efficiency and Comfort

Daikin AC's VRV IVDaikin AC is well known for its trail blazing approach to development of products and the outstanding quality of its versatile integrated practical solutions. Fifty years of experience in the manufacture and design of cooling and heating applications make Daikin an industry leader. The market leader in heat pump technology, Daikin always delivers. Across Europe Daikin Altherma and Daikin VRV, have the highest sales with over half a million air conditioning systems sold, delivered, and installed.

Daikin’s Background

Daikin AC has always set the standard for air conditioning innovation. Their first rotary compressor was built in Japan in 1958, followed by further landmark development in 1969 when the first multi split air conditioner was developed. Continuing to stay ahead of the pack, Daikin was the first company to manufacture a heat pump that met the standards for it to be granted the European Eco label. Another first for Daikin was the manufacture of heat pumps that used the new generation of refrigerants such as R410A, R407C, and R744.

Daikin AC’s biggest breakthrough of all was the very first Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV) system. This innovation opened up a new sector in the air conditioning market for VRF systems.

The New VRV IV

Daikin AC has once again raced ahead with its fourth generation VRV system. New benchmarks for efficiency have been established and there are significant enhancements to this system that already leads the industry. The VRV IV has three innovations:

  • Variable refrigerant temperature
  • Continuous heating on the heat pump
  • VRV configuration for easier commissioning.

The VRV IV heat pump units and the heat recovery units are available now.

This new technology allows the installation engineer to fully customise the installed system with a variety of preset options. This means that comfort balance and energy efficiency can be optimised for the entire system. When on automatic mode, the system is pre-configured for the maximum levels of efficiency year round, allowing rapid responses in extremes of temperature.

These configurations result in 25% increase in efficiency throughout the seasons as the refrigerant temperature is constantly controlled depending on demand required and outdoor temperature. A good example of this is when temperature is moderate and the room temperature is near to what is required. The air conditioning system will still make the adjustment in temperature bringing it up to the desired one. This means less energy is required and seasonal variations are seemless in terms of room comfort.

Another brand new innovation is continuous heat while defrosting making VRV IV the very best heat pump alternative you can buy to a conventional, traditional heating system. The reason this defrosting method is so important is that all heat pumps build up ice during the heating operation. Obviously, this will need periodic defrosting. Prior technology used to reverse the refrigeration cycle, which caused quite a drop in temperature, which would be noticeable for a temporary period. The VRV IV however, deals with ice build up seamlessly without any temperature change.

The VRV configurator offers advanced software to simplify commissioning. This considerably shortens the time needed to configure the outdoor unit. Maintenance becomes easier with a graphical interface for evaluation of operational data and errors.

VRV IV integrates with intelligent solutions

For building management purposes Daikin has an intelligent touch manager that offers a user-friendly interface with floor plan that can manage up to 2560 groups of indoor units.

There is no doubt that Daikin AC have come up with yet another winner in its stable of products and we are sure for those customers who are concerned about rising energy costs, the Daikin VRV IV will fulfil all their needs.

Air Ventilation System for Your Home

At Simply Air Conditioning London, customers concerned about home air ventilation system often contact us so we decided to produce an article to give an overview on the importance of proper home ventilation. We show how a home ventilation system can preserve your building and improve the quality of the air inside the home.

Why Air Ventilation is Needed

All houses need ventilation, which, means outdoor air is exchanged with indoor air to reduce pollutants, moisture and gases. Air pollution is more common than people think and contaminants in air such as formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds, and radon gas are all responsible for health problems if proper ventilation is absent from a home. Inadequate ventilation causes a build up of pollutants and can allow unpleasant odours to build up and toxic vapours to stagnate. Moisture build up in the atmosphere causes black mould, which is an irritant and dangerous to health especially for asthmatics and allergy sufferers. Moisture needs to be removed from the internal air in a property to avoid dampness and risk to structural integrity.

The standards for ventilation rates in living areas should be at least 15 cubic feet per minute, per person. Usually, air flows into a building through holes, cracks, doors, and windows. These days, flinging open the widows to allow fresh air to circulate in the home is not as common as it used to be, no doubt because with energy costs being so high, people are reluctant for their expensive centrally heated air to escape from the home and who can blame them. Before central heating was commonplace, there is no doubt people were hardier and fresh air was considered to be important for health and for the home. Today’s homes therefore are at the mercy of infiltration

Unfortunately, infiltration rates are unpredictable and difficult to control. The rate of infiltration of unwelcome pollutants varies depending on wind factor, outside temperature and how well the house is sealed. In fact, the very things that were designed to make our homes efficient and heat retaining such as double-glazing also make ventilation insufficient in many cases. Equally, the less well sealed home is open to unwelcome infiltration of polluted air especially in cities or industrialised areas.

Ventilation Systems

A whole house ventilation system uses one or possibly more fans and duct systems to exchange old, stale air for fresh filtered air. Experts in the home energy field have a saying which is “seal tight, ventilate right”. The result of doing so can be much lower energy bills and greatly improved air quality.

Spot Ventilation

The use of cooker hoods and bathroom exhaust fans is known as “spot” ventilation and they can be a very important method in quickly removing moisture and smells right where it is generated. It can be a very important tool for improving air quality and keeping the home fresh. This type of ventilation should always be present in every home regardless.

Whole House Air Ventilation

Even if there is spot ventilation in obvious areas, the decision to install a whole house ventilation system should be considered, especially if the home is showing signs of dampness, mould, or allergy sufferers are resident. There are many different kinds of whole home ventilation systems and we can guide you on the best solution for your particular house meaning you will have a bespoke system tailored to your specific needs at an affordable price. Our engineers are fully accredited and are experts in this type of system installation. We will do a complete no obligation survey and give you a proper quotation that will include components, all labour, and a guaranteed installation time.

Depending on your individual house type, one of several different system types is installed. Air will be forced mechanically from the home to the outside classified as exhaust ventilation. Balanced ventilation is where equal amounts of airflow into or out of the home and supply ventilation constantly supplies fresh air into the home.

Modern houses tend to have more bathrooms or even wet rooms adding to the moisture issue. Rather than individual spot extraction of air from these rooms, it may be more economical to install a central extraction ventilation unit rather than have several in different rooms. A system of this type involves only one vent to be connected to the exterior of the building. The connection can be made through a wall or the roof. Only one electrical connection is required so there are energy savings to be made as well.

Finding the Ideal Room Temperature

Finding the ideal room temperature for personal comfort is something that is often not easy to maintain. Just as we are asked to be energy efficient, homes in the UK are getting warmer. It may be nearly Spring but many people will be running their heating systems at full capacity until it warms up enough to turn off the heating.

Now that well insulated homes and central heating is commonplace, the average ambient temperature is creeping up. Over many years, the ideal room temperature has varied and many studies have taken place finding the ideal room temperature for working and living. According to the World Health Organisation, comfort is difficult to absolutely define, but their standard for warmth is 18C (64F) for suitably dressed healthy people. For those suffering allergies or respiratory disease, the temperature should be a minimum of 16C (60.8C), with disabled, sick, very young or very old comfortable in a minimum of 20C (68F).

How Home Temperature Has Changed

Before central heating, people wore more clothing indoors and were used to lower temperatures so despite our progress for more energy efficient ways of living, the ideal room temperature in 1940 for example would be significantly lower. People are more sedentary in the home these days and household chores that were done manually are now done by machine. Consequently, it feels chillier and the thermostat goes up.

The last measurement survey on indoor temperatures took place in 1996, when it was found that the living room temperatures in winter remained the same as 1986 at about 19C, hallways and other rooms had increased by two degrees. With energy bills rising in recent years, and more awareness of energy consumption, finding the ideal room temperature at the right price is becoming ever more important.

While it is likely that all members of a family sharing a home will disagree on the ideal room temperature, some being chilly sorts and others that dislike too much heat, an ambient temperature can be found to suit all with a little compromise. Buildings vary greatly and differences in insulation, glazed windows, draught proofing, and build all affect how efficiently energy is used. Finding a heating system that is energy efficient, good value and delivers high performance for less energy for all these variables is difficult unless you consider air conditioning. Finding the ideal room temperature is simple with the right air conditioning system.

Air Conditioning Systems

Finding the ideal room temperature and keeping it stable throughout the home is something that modern central air conditioning systems can do. Often the first thing people think of about air conditioning is the old-fashioned rattling units on windowsills or in hotel rooms. The modern air conditioning split systems will ensure an ambient temperature of your choice in every room of the house.

Heating and cooling are two sides of the same coin and an air conditioning system can keep your home at the same temperature all year round or make it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Air conditioning is ideal for allergy sufferers and it controls the humidity so you always have the right balance in your rooms. Once adjusted to the temperature of choice the system will run quietly, economically and efficiently in the background only balancing the temperature if an event such as opening a window or door causes the thermostat temperature to rise or fall. Any variance in the temperature is carefully adjusted so you never feel any chills or overheating. You are able to experiment with different settings until you find the perfect ambient temperature and humidity.

Clever controls allow you to programme the settings even when you are away from home so that your ideal temperature awaits you on arrival home.

We stock a variety of top quality air conditioning systems that will make finding the ideal room temperature easy. We perform the calculations to ensure you have the right sized units and also provide a clean, fast installation followed by a full back up service and maintenance.

Window Air Conditioning Units Vs Portable Air Conditioners

In this article, we are looking at two types of air conditioning units that are ideal if you are looking for summer cooling and some winter heating for one area in the house or even multiple units for more than one room. Everyone knows of the “old timer” window air conditioning unit beloved of New York apartment blocks and Hong Kong high rises, but today’s sleek models are a world away from those atmospheric but clunky old style units.

Window Air Conditioners

These are the most common type of air conditioning units and solve your microclimate problem cost effectively. A window air conditioning unit is a single monoblock – a single case containing all the components that makes it sleek and free of any unsightly outlet hoses. The units come in different colours these days including pastels so you can even co-ordinate the unit to your décor. This single unit is mounted into the window opening. The condenser, evaporator, fan, and compressor are tidily fixed inside the case. This link has a useful diagram so you can see how it works.

The cooling operation of a window device has huge advantages when you need instant cooling or warmth. Remote control options are available which means you can control the system from the comfort of your seat. There is a wide range of temperatures so you can find the optimum one for you. Powerful performance is common with these compact systems with cooling and heating distributed with even airflow.

The major advantage of a window air conditioner is price and easy installation. The window air conditioning models also use far less refrigerant than other types, which is important for the environment. Economical operation combined with comfortable cooling and heating make the window air conditioner the first choice for affordability and compactness.

Window air conditioning units Advantages:

  • Affordability.
  • Compact style.
  • Can provide partial ventilation.
  • No installation required.
  • Portable from place to place.
  • Suitable for apartments, offices, summerhouses, and smaller homes.
  • Simple maintenance.
  • Reliability.

Portable Air Conditioning Units

This type of air conditioning system is useful for those rooms that cannot accommodate a window unit. The main benefit of a portable air conditioning unit is they can be used in the room where they are needed and set up again fairly quickly provided there is enough room for all of the exhaust hoses.

It is very important when setting up a portable air conditioning unit that you are within seven feet of a ventilation source. This is because the unit contains refrigerant, which may be Freon, which can be dangerous if it leaks into the environment. The units while performing the function of cooling or warming your room space can be intrusive in the room especially if you have to move furniture or put the unit in an awkward space so it is well ventilated. On the whole, despite the drawbacks, they are affordably priced and are popular in workplaces as a temporary option.

This type of system works by venting out warm air. Most portable air conditioning units come with venting kits including an exhaust hose around 5 to 7 feet long, five inches in diameter. These are made of flexible high quality, durable material and can be modified to suit your needs. Portable air conditioning units produce water due to condensation and this will need draining from the collection tank from time to time.

We offer a range of easy solutions for your window and portable air conditioning units and are happy to advise on the right solution for your home to suit your lifestyle.

Knowing when to Recharge Air Conditioning

Sometimes air conditioning units need to be recharged. Knowing when to recharge will help your air conditioning unit to work efficiently using energy economically. Sometimes the first sign that an air conditioning unit needs recharging is when the air conditioning unit has difficulty in cooling the room temperature. This is usually linked directly to the refrigerant levels in the unit.

Adding refrigerant is usually one of the first things people think of when air conditioners are not working properly or stops cooling the air. This may not be the immediate solution to the problem. All air conditioning units are charged with the correct amount of refrigerant and the balance is set. In the course of an air conditioning unit being used, it is possible for a change in the charge and or refrigerant to occur. Refrigerant does not evaporate or burn off like other liquids, so it is only in the event of a leak that refrigerant needs replacing or recharging. Of course, the system must be examined in detail to identify any leaks that need to be repaired before any recharge or adding of refrigerant takes place.

Leaks

Once any leaks are repaired often, a recharging of the air conditioning system is often the solution to any inefficiency in the system. Knowing when to recharge an air conditioning unit is a job for a professional engineer once other diagnostic procedures have been carried out when your system is not functioning, as it should be.

Refrigerant and the Environment

The medium that cools in your air conditioning is called refrigerant. In most domestic air conditioners, the refrigerant is Freon (which is a chlorofluorocarbon or CFC). Freon is a controlled substance, which is a hazard when released into the atmosphere and is harmful to the Earths ozone layer if not properly handled. As air conditioning does not consume Freon, it will never need replacing except for a leak. Should your engineer ever recommend adding or replacing this substance then in accordance with environmental laws, the refrigerant will be extracted and filtered by a recycling refrigerant machine. Because of the hazardous nature of this process only qualified engineers should perform this process and do it yourself is never recommended.

A regular check of the coolant or Freon levels of your air conditioning system is important. A loss of 10% in coolant levels will add 20 percent to your electricity bill and cause wear and tear to your unit. We carry out this check in our regular annual service

Recharging

Recharging your system is necessary as a low charge decreases the efficiency of an air conditioning unit. A low charge will cause the unit to operate at higher ranges than it should. Units that have been running on low charge for long periods of time are likely to need replacing. Professional air conditioning engineers will only recharge air conditioning units when all remedial work is carried out and only if it will remedy the deficiencies of the system. Knowing when to recharge air conditioning is something your engineer will be an expert on, as it requires careful analysis and re-balancing of the system.

Your accredited engineer also knows the rules and regulations for handling the refrigerant and disposing of any discarded fluids. It is essential to have this process done in accordance with the law, as it is a hazardous process that damages the environment. If you were to tamper with the refrigerant on your air conditioning system, it is quite likely your home insurance would invalidate any claims that may be made in the future.

Knowing when to recharge air conditioning is as simple as checking your refrigerant levels and noticing any decline in performance of the system. If your electricity bills are up this is another clue. In any of these events, call your air conditioning professional who will determine if you need a recharge, repair, or refrigerant top up as soon as you suspect anything. Remember if you have an affordable annual maintenance plan, these issues will be dealt with for you.

One cool kitty had a fortunate escape when he was finally rescued form an air conditioning unit by animal rescue workers in Brisbane Australia. As we know some unusual things can be found from time to time in air conditioning units and the problems are usually soon solved. This poor cat however was trapped inside the air conditioning unit for over a week.

The animal rescuers say the female tabby cat they found was badly malnourished and had burns on her ears and drag injuries. She was extremely dehydrated when she was finally freed from an air conditioner fixed to a wall in the south of Brisbane.

The owner of the air conditioning unit heard strange scratching noises coming from the aging device but dismissed the noise as rodent infestation. Eventually he called the Australian RSPCA who responded to his call. The RSPCA reported that the air conditioning unit was an ancient 1970’s dinosaur of a unit.

At first, the rescuers did not know what they were dealing with as there was a pungent odour of urine that they also thought might be rats. They proceeded to dismantle the unit and had to take it off the wall to find the poor tabby inside a turbine.

“Let’s call it Daikin”

The lucky cat was named “Daikin” by the rescue workers. She was very frightened, skinny and poorly which is no wonder given her length of entrapment. Nobody has been able to work out how Daikin got into the air conditioning unit in the first place as it was a very tight space with no room for manoeuvre. Cats are renowned for sliding into tight spots, but this one was exceptionally tight.

Daikin underwent surgery while the search for her owners commenced. She was not micro chipped but was neutered so is likely to be a domestic pet rather than a feral cat.

Dog saved by air con

As Daikin reflects on her adventure with a saucer of milk, we reflect upon the plight of a poor dog that was bizarrely saved by air conditioning.

Animal campaigners are demanding answers after an abandoned dog was rescued at a motel in America. One campaigner was picking up a friend at the motel and heard continuous barking from a boarded up room. When motel guests were asked about the situation, it transpired the dog had been boarded up in the room for almost two months. The motel guests had been feeding the poor abandoned creature through the air conditioning vent to keep the dog alive.

The abandoned pooch was taken to an animal shelter after he was rescued, where he received medical attention. He will now be re-homed with a family who will take care of him.

Two happy endings in air conditioning stories for these two unfortunate pets we are delighted to say!

Have you got any funny stories relating to your pets and your air conditioning and heating systems? If so, we’d love to hear them (especially the happy ones!)

“Our open plan office houses around 100 people. Air distribution and draft was an issue for some of them prior to fitting air deflectors. Since the fitting we’ve not had a single complaint!”

How we got here

Air conditioning is known to have been applied in Ancient Rome: aqueduct water was passed through walls of houses to cool them. In medieval Persia similar techniques involving the use of cisterns and wind towers were used in the hot season to cool buildings.

Modern air conditioning emerged after advances in 19th Century chemistry, and it was Willis Haviland Carrier who invented and first used a large-scale electrical air conditioning system in 1902.

Air Conditioner Definition

An appliance, unit, system, or machine designed to stabilise the temperature and humidity of air within an area (used for both heating as well as cooling). A refrigeration cycle is the most common method of achieving this although sometimes evaporative coolers are used for comfort cooling inside buildings and vehicles.

What You Should Know About your Air Conditioning Unit

Air Conditioning unit maintenanceIn this article, we are giving some information on what you should know about your air conditioning unit. An air conditioning unit is a system that uses a series of ducts to distribute cool air to more than one room. It may also use pipes to distribute water that is chilled to heat exchangers in more than one room. Air conditioning units also come as stand-alone units for single rooms and some types can be used as heating systems too.

A typical split air conditioning system has a condenser and compressor in an outdoor unit, with an evaporator in the air-handling unit. Some systems have all components situated outdoors. Air moves into vents inside the home from the condenser via one or more air filters. These air filters help purify the air and keep any harmful particles at bay. Air filters need cleaning and replacing regularly.

Knowing about your air conditioning unit, enables you to operate it much more efficiently once you know some basics

General Information

The compressor is a motor that cools refrigerant, and a fan pushes the cooled air into the building. It is helpful to become familiar with the normal amount of airflow you unit generates, and then you can tell if there is anything wrong with the flow if necessary.

A useful check is to check room temperature and the air temperature of the flow from the air conditioning unit. The air from the unit should be around 20 degrees F below room temperature.

Coils

The coils in your unit should be regularly checked to make sure they are clean. The build up of dust on coils is one of the main reasons air conditioners become inefficient. Your maintenance engineers will clean them in the regular yearly check up of your unit, but will always come and check them for you if you are concerned.

Refrigerant

The refrigerant allows your air conditioning unit to cool the air that passes through. Refrigerant gases have become a lot more environmentally friendly, but there are huge efforts all the time to develop new refrigerants that are better for the environment. In Europe, carbon dioxide (R-744) is increasingly being used as a refrigerant with a global warming potential of 1, which compares well to older refrigerants that are still in use that have a global impact potential of 1800. The air conditioning unit is charged with refrigerant at installation.

Efficiency of Your Air Conditioning Unit

Simple common sense helps to reduce the amount of energy expended by the air conditioning unit.

  • On hot days leaving curtains drawn and avoiding the use of appliances like fans helps. Heat generating activities such as ironing or cooking are best left until the evening.
  • Always make sure the thermostat of your air conditioning unit is not near any heat generating devices such as a TV set of lamp as the sensor will detect the heat and keep the system running for longer than necessary.
  • Make sure windows and doors are properly sealed. Whether you are using your unit for cooling or heating the same rule applies.
  • Check the sealant in the space between the air conditioning unit and the wall. This sealant can be damaged by moisture so regular checks will alert you if the seal needs attention.
  • The unit’s drain should be looked at occasionally. If moisture is not coming out, then it is likely the drain is clogged which will cause the unit to ice up.
  • Every degree you set your air conditioning below 78F, costs increase by 3 or 4 %, so obviously running your system very cold or very hot will increase energy usage.

While it is important for all owners of air conditioning units to be familiar with their appliances, nothing substitutes for a professional engineer experienced with all kinds of makes and models. When things do go wrong, it is more cost effective in most cases to call out an engineer rather than risk a DIY repair. We are always on the end of the phone for any advice you may need and we look forward to hearing from you.
