AC Installations in Lofts, London

AC Installations in Lofts, London

There is a bit of competition here at Simply Air Conditioning between us engineers; all in good fun though. We wear smart watches and use them to see who has climbed the most stairs or walked the most steps in the course of the working day. I think we need to do a weekly chart back at HQ. Some of us have an advantage sometimes (or disadvantage some might say) when we are working on installations in lofts. As can be imagined there is an awful lot of stair climbing. Our installations are physical anyway but when lots of stairs are involved it is a heart healthy work out!

We are all conscious of staying healthy these days and it is great to do so much exercise in the course of the working day. It certainly helps when we decide to indulge in our favourite Nando’s from time to time! Many people are also beginning to realise the health benefits of air conditioning to improve health. The incidence of asthma, allergies and respiratory conditions has increased in recent years as the increase in sales of anti-allergic bedding, vacuum cleaners with special filters and so forth. We are becoming quite the allergic generation.

When suffering seasonal allergies like hay fever or year-round allergies to pet dander or dust mites, air conditioning can help you breathe more easily. Air conditioning filters irritant air particles and indoor air quality is improved. The particles get stopped by filters and are prevented from continuing through the system. By maintaining optimum humidity within the home, air quality is balanced which is especially important when our homes are so insulated and sealed.

Quote from one of our happy air deflector free trial recipients:

“Our open plan office houses around 100 people. Air distribution and draft was an issue for some of them prior to fitting air deflectors. Since the fitting we’ve not had a single complaint!”

How we got here

Air conditioning is known to have been applied in Ancient Rome: aqueduct water was passed through walls of houses to cool them. In medieval Persia similar techniques involving the use of cisterns and wind towers were used in the hot season to cool buildings.

Modern air conditioning emerged after advances in 19th Century chemistry, and it was Willis Haviland Carrier who invented and first used a large-scale electrical air conditioning system in 1902.

Air Conditioner Definition

An appliance, unit, system, or machine designed to stabilise the temperature and humidity of air within an area (used for both heating as well as cooling). A refrigeration cycle is the most common method of achieving this although sometimes evaporative coolers are used for comfort cooling inside buildings and vehicles.

Domestic Air Conditioning Installation in South Yorkshire

AC Installation in South Yorkshire

We love a road trip and when we were invited to install an air conditioning system in South Yorkshire how could we resist? Yorkshire is not known as God’s own country for nothing (well according the Yorkshire people) but it must be said it is one of the most fascinating places steeped in history, industry and natural beauty. Although we did not have time to play tourist, we still enjoyed the beauty of the countryside as we passed by and drove through some famous places on the way. Who can fail to be impressed by the Peak District, the moors and the once industrial heartland of cities like Sheffield?

But to work! We were installing a Panasonic air conditioning system for a family home. Domestic air conditioning varies from commercial solutions as aesthetics are important and we need to ensure the client is happy with the style and look of the unit. We install as unobtrusively as possible by ensuring a proper thorough survey beforehand. As can be seen from the photographs, the discreet indoor unit and the outdoor unit which is far less obvious than say a satellite dish, makes this a simple yet effective solution for a home.

Of course, we are mindful of cost with domestic situations and always match an energy efficient unit that is suitable for the installation site.   Many domestic customers come back to us to comment on the savings on their energy bills since installation with significant savings achieved over a 12-month period. The initial outlay on a domestic system such as this pays for itself in a very short space of time on the lower energy costs. With the increasingly warm summers many homeowners are realising that a cooling system or dual system (heating and cooling) are a modern efficient way to control the air temperature and air quality with the benefits it brings.

R32 Comfort Cooling Console Unit Installation, London

Cooling Console Unit Installation London

We installed this very stylish R32 Comfort Cooling Console Unit today. This type of console unit contains all the necessary components in one unit. This type of unit is a simple kind of installation and causes minimal disruption. A console style is one of the more economic air conditioning options. We opted for one that contains R32 refrigerant. What is so special about R32 refrigerant? Like many responsible businesses, we are concerned about the impact our products have on the environment and are always looking for ways to reduce the environmental impact by researching products and components that are more energy efficient and have sustainability.

R32 is an efficient next generation refrigerant that carries heat effectively and has lower environmental impact. Refrigerant is the medium for conveying heat in the system and all air conditioners transfer this heat between the outside and inside units.

R32 is a new refrigerant and the reason it is attracting a lot of fans is that not only does it convey heat efficiently, but it can also reduce consumption of electricity by up to 10% which is environment friendly. Additionally, compared to most refrigerants in use these days, R32 has a global warming potential (GWP) that is one third lower than other refrigerants.

Strict regulations regarding consideration for the global effects of refrigerant gases stemmed from the Montreal Protocol in 1987 and the Kyoto Protocol in 1997. This resulted in manufacturers moving to refrigerants with low environmental impact. R32 has an ozone depletion potential of 0, and approximately 1/3 of the GWP of the most commonly used refrigerant R410A. As R32 overtakes R410A, the reduction in environmental effects will be remarkable. This is great news for us all.

Air Conditioning Units Installation In South London

Air Conditioning Installation in a French School – South London

“Alors, qui parle” This was the question we remember from school and usually it was one of us doing the talking in class. However, it did not detract from us becoming engineers and this project brought back memories of our esteemed French teacher who had an awful lot to put up with from us!

This project for the school gave us pause to revisit why air conditioning in schools can be important. Many of us can remember sweltering in school classrooms during the summer months and the teachers would be as hot and bothered as the pupils which often led to sleepy pupils and a distinct lack of learning as everyone was distracted by the heat.

The benefits of air conditioning in a school have been proven time and again. A classroom that is too hot or too cold reduces concentration, problem solving ability not to mention irritability of pupils which can lead to tensions. A comfortable classroom is so important for learning. A cooler temperature is important to maintain alertness but also for health as well. In an environment where viruses and all kinds of nasty bugs spread like wildfire, air conditioning can filter the air and reduce the incidence of illness and absence from school.

Studies have shown that overheated classrooms are responsible for a 12% increase in exam failure which is a frightening fact. It is no wonder that more schools are installing an air conditioning system to provide year-round comfort for pupils to aid in the learning process and improve exam outcomes and learning outcomes.

Perhaps if our school had air conditioning, we may have been a little more focussed on our efforts. Our French may not be that great, but our air conditioning installations are professional and always to the customer’s satisfaction. “Au Revoir” until next time.

Air Conditioning Installation, Wimbledon

Air Conditioning Installation, Wimbledon

Anyone for Tennis? Unfortunately, our installation of a Fujitsu rooftop air conditioning unit happened at the wrong time of year for us. Looking out from the rooftop we were hoping to get a glimpse of the famed All England Tennis Club home of world-renowned Wimbledon Tennis Tournament and see some famous names rallying. The view from this premises would have been great!

We often use rooftop installations of air conditioning units such as this Fujitsu. It may seem a little odd to expose the units to all weathers, but they are robust and designed for the job. The rooftop units have a host of benefits, especially for our commercial clients.

Rooftop units mean that any repairs can be done unobtrusively rather than having us lot up ladders and so forth in a working business premises. As technicians, it is easier for us too to deal with a unit in a specific place where it will not affect the day to day business running. Rooftop access is also useful when upgrading equipment and moving new and out.

Another benefit is it allows clients to either increase or decrease their heating and cooling needs according to requirements. If a business is expanding the size of the premises or the building is split, new units can be seamlessly installed without major fuss and disruption. We can simply install the required modular unit onto the roof space. Adding and subtracting units becomes so much more streamlined.

Using the roof top also helps maximise the area size available in the premises which is important especially in cities like London where every square inch of space is precious and expensive.

We will just have to watch Wimbledon tennis on the television with our strawberries and cream when it comes around.

Cool and Heat Unit Installation in Battersea

Unit Installation in Battersea – Magical day yesterday installing a unit to a cool and heat a Fairy themed party venue in Battersea.

The Fairy’s even made the air conditioning units disappear! ✨

Cool and Heat Unit Installation in Battersea

We often think we are magicians in the course of our work, so imagine our delight when we were invited to work our magic in Battersea on a delightful fairy themed party venue. We could not fail to be impressed by this charming house that accommodates children’s parties and it must be said we felt completely at home amongst the unicorns and fairy cupcakes. Alas, our job was to provide some wizardry to keep all the little fairies warm and cosy and cool and relaxed and not to eat cake and try on the fairy flower crowns!

We worked our magic with a heating and cooling unit that was discreet and quiet and could be disguised a little by the décor. With lots of little ones visiting it was important that the right ambient temperature and air quality would provide optimum levels for everyone’s comfort. As a year-round venue, heating was as important as cooling as there is a lot of dress up involved and fairy frocks are not exactly the warmest of garments in winter. Good air quality is also important for health reasons. With lots of children mingling, good air quality and filtered air can help against those sniffles and bugs that even fairies can catch.

We were delighted with the finished result and felt the installation was unobtrusive and the perfect way to regulate heating and cooling efficiently all year round. The interior design fairies were able to wave their wands and completely transform the air conditioning unit components into part of the décor as can be seen from the photos we took. Tempting as it was to linger in this special place, it was time for us to magically disappear and leave the residents of this special place to enjoy their new heating and cooling.

Indoor Unit Installation in Twickenham

Unit Installation in Twickenham

Twickenham; the home of English Rugby. We do get around in our day to day work and it is always interesting as there are landmarks, buildings and history to discover and it makes for great chat during travelling and rest breaks. Rather than be in Twickenham to cheer on the rugby, we were returning to a premises in Twickenham to complete the installation of a Fujitsu indoor air conditioning unit. We had of course done our usual planning and surveys ahead of time with the client and thought we would mention some of the decision processes we go through at the start of a new project.

An indoor air conditioning wall unit is ideal if one area in the home gets particularly hot and offers much quieter running that the portable standalone units. The size needs to be calculated accurately to ensure we maximise the area that is cooled or heated with minimum energy use.

If the client is concerned about the energy use of an air conditioner will use, we recommend a unit with a good energy efficiency ratio (EER). Generally, the higher the EER, the more efficient the air conditioner. This is the ratio between an air conditioner’s BTU and it’s the power input (in watts).

There are also any additional features the client may opt for and these options include a sleep or night mode where the compressor and fan run more slowly thus reducing noise. It must be said that most modern units run very quietly anyway but it’s a useful option to have.

There is also a dehumidifier mode for extra control and enables the air conditioner to be useful all through the year, not just in the warmer months. A built-in dehumidifier means a separate one does not need to be used and will help balancing out the over dry atmosphere some homes have in wintertime.

Timer options are useful to control when the unit is on and there are also remote controls for operation.

Roof Installation Chiswick High Street

Air Conditioning Installation in Chiswick

Lots of hard work today to get this 120kg condenser onto the roof.
….time for a Nandos!

It was a good job we had 3 Weetabix for breakfast on the day of this installation of a condenser on the roof of a building in Chiswick High Street. The view over the rooftops was amazing but getting back to work we had a tricky access and needed to get the 120kg condenser in place. This meant a lot of pre planning which is our stock in trade anyway, and we had to use special tackle and ensure that no damage was done to this essential piece of equipment or indeed the building and interior.

We used a Fujitsu unit which is streamlined and smart looking and not too intrusive on the skyline. There are two sides to an air conditioning system; a cold side and a hot side. The cold side of the air conditioning system has an evaporator and fan which blows air over chilled coils and into the room.

The hot side of the air conditioning system contains the compressor, condenser and another fan which vents hot air coming off the compressed refrigerant to outside. Between two sets of coils, an expansion valve sits. This regulates compressed liquid refrigerant flow moving into the evaporator where the refrigerant undergoes a pressure drop then expands and reverts to gas. The compressor is an electric pump that pressurises refrigerant gas.

With a lot of hard work, we successfully installed the unit onto the roof without any mishaps and continued to complete the installation successfully to the client’s satisfaction. It is always so rewarding when a job with added complexity goes well so were feeling quite pleased with ourselves. Consequently, we thought we deserved to replenish all our spent energy; so off to Nando’s we went!

Air Conditioning Installation in a new Dental Practice in Paddington

Air Conditioning Installation in Paddington

We finally finished this project to provide a dental surgery with air conditioning on a very damp, wet, grim day. However, our clients were left smiling and looking forward to using the air conditioning system which will enhance the comfort of patients and staff as well as provide a healthy atmosphere for dental work.

Without air conditioning, a dental practice would be quite a hazardous environment as dental professionals and patients are exposed to a variety of infectious agents transported by aerosols and droplets. Inside the mouth is quite contaminated with bacteria so to reduce the risk of cross infection, the air conditioning system must be capable of reducing the risk of infection and cleaning the air. The different kinds of dental equipment can also disperse these airborne contaminants into the atmosphere. Viruses, gasses, particles, bacteria and pathogens freely stay in the air for many hours and eventually drop onto surfaces. Fortunately, the superior job air conditioning does, keeps the air surgically clean in the treatment rooms and equipment rooms providing clean air and removing any harmful elements.

Maintenance of the Fujitsu units is especially needed in this environment and with the maintenance service we provide and understanding the importance of reducing the recirculation of these environmental contaminants, the dental practice personnel can rest assured that the air conditioning system will always work at optimal capacity to keep the air fresh, clean and healthy. This has benefits for productivity as staff and patients are far less exposed to bacteria and viruses and less likely to become sick.

Apart from keeping the air free of contaminants, the multi functioning Fujitsu units mean that heating and cooling is also provided making the dental surgery a place of comfort with fresh air and ideal ambient temperature for staff and patients.

Cost savings are on the cards as well and we expect to see the heating bills reducing nicely as time goes on for this dental practice.
