F-gas objectives

I previously wrote an article about the F-Gas regulation stating why it is now a legal requirement to have your installed air conditioning unit checked regularly. If you missed it, read the article on F-Gases here.

But what are the objectives of the F-Gas regulation?

Well, the main objective is to reduce emissions F gases, which are fluorinated greenhouse gases. It is for the good of the environment and part of the global attempt to control the changes to climate as laid out in the Kyoto Protocol. The regulation should contribute significantly towards the Kyoto target. Containment and recovery of f-gases are of prime concern, as is the restriction of marketing and use of the gases in air conditioning units and other appliances where their containment is not easy to uphold. There is also a restriction on marketing and use of F-gases where their use is considered inappropriate such as when there are suitable alternatives.

“Our open plan office houses around 100 people. Air distribution and draft was an issue for some of them prior to fitting air deflectors. Since the fitting we’ve not had a single complaint!”

How we got here

Air conditioning is known to have been applied in Ancient Rome: aqueduct water was passed through walls of houses to cool them. In medieval Persia similar techniques involving the use of cisterns and wind towers were used in the hot season to cool buildings.

Modern air conditioning emerged after advances in 19th Century chemistry, and it was Willis Haviland Carrier who invented and first used a large-scale electrical air conditioning system in 1902.

Air Conditioner Definition

An appliance, unit, system, or machine designed to stabilise the temperature and humidity of air within an area (used for both heating as well as cooling). A refrigeration cycle is the most common method of achieving this although sometimes evaporative coolers are used for comfort cooling inside buildings and vehicles.

Adapting surroundings

Humans originated in Africa. We then spread across world to occupy and now occupy almost every landmass. Even in impossibly inhospitable conditions. We not only survive in these places, we thrive there. We’ve adapted to environments, be they frozen or bone dry. Our success in doing so is due to our ability to adapt to our surroundings and, where necessary, adapt our surroundings to suit us by changing their environment.

In Australia about half of the population own an air conditioner. It has been known for tourists to die when walking to nearest settlements for help when their cars have broken down. However, Australia is a beautiful place to visit and air conditioning allows for people not used to the temperatures to visit the hottest areas free of worry.

Tourists flock to America’s Death Valley each year. Its name derives from the misfortunes suffered by the first people to inhabit the area. However, it is an area of miles of wonderful sand dunes, rocks and canyons, inhabited by a wide range of wildlife and boasting unique salt evaporation features. Its land slopes from a height of 1km above to 86 metres below sea level and it’s this depression that leads to temperatures rising over 130 degrees Fahrenheit. An incredible place to visit, but definitely not without air-conditioning.

Dubai, is an area in the Arabian Peninsula whose main revenues are from from real estate, tourism and financial services. Its recent construction boom would not have occurred without the omnipresence of air conditioning. The modern builds make it a lot easier to stay in Dubai compared to the older parts of town which lacks the modern amenity. Without air conditioning Dubai would not be the attractive retreat for the famous and wealthy who buy up its real estate.

Antarctica was the last great wilderness for humans as it is one of the most inhospitable places in the world. However, scientists now live for months on end at research stations there and tourists can visit the barren yet beautiful region. Without temperature control at the research centres and buildings this would not be possible. Tourists are only allowed onshore at certain times and are never unescorted. This is primarily in the interest of conservation, but also because people unprepared for the Antarctic environment would not survive very long.

While we don’t need air con to survive it makes our lives a lot more pleasant and allows us to explore and live in areas that would otherwise be a lot less attractive.

History and Usage

We usually think of air conditioning as a modern innovation. However, its origins are believed to go back at least as far as the ancient Romans. Evidence of aqueducts built for the purpose of circulating water through house walls to cool rooms can be seen in many cases. Similar techniques have also been found in archaeological remains from the medieval times in Persia. Here wind towers and cisterns were built to cool houses. As shown on in the ‘How We Got Here’ section on our air con supply page, the modern air conditioning unit was developed by Willis Haviland Carrier at the beginning of the twentieth century. Air conditioning can refer to any form of cooling, heating or ventilation to alter the condition of air. It is used most commonly in homes and offices create a pleasant living and working environment. Air conditioners are used for both cooling and heating buildings using either a refrigeration cycle or evaporation. As we know, air conditioning is also installed in cars, trains, coaches and planes to make traveling a more pleasant experience.

Air Con Evo: Cooler You

With the important current concerns about sustainability and becoming a lot more environmentally friendly, new technologies are constantly being designed in every industry to reduce impacts upon the environment. The air conditioning industry is no different in taking these steps towards designing and developing more efficient systems.

Obviously finding the right balance is no mean feat. The main features to be considered are as follows: affordability, design, ecology, effectiveness, energy consumption and technology. If just one of these factors is overlooked the air conditioner will more than likely be unsuccessful on the market.

As we continue to develop and install more efficient conventional air conditioners there are also there are many interesting revolutionary concepts catching attention:

There’s a simple yet effective futuristic-style, tree-shaped air con system that uses heat from the ground and an Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) system. The branches, which look natural, control airflow direction and spread filtered clean air over a larger area than conventional air conditioning systems.

Another one, known as “Fresco Di Lana”, developed by Laura Boffi is a woolen curtain that filters and cools hot air as it enters the area. There is a water pump which keeps the curtain wet. The water pump also acts as a vertical indoor garden which provides perfect environmental conditions for humans as well as allowing plants to grow in the pockets of the wool.

The uber-futuristic Habitat 2020 was introduced in China. Habitat 2020 is a form of sustainable housing. Traditional materials used for building houses are scrapped and highly sensitive ‘skins’ are used to build houses instead. These ‘skins’ act as membranes between the environment inside and outside the house. The air outside enters the skin and travels through various funnels. Inside these funnels it is filtered and cooled before being spread evenly into the room. The ‘skin’ also emits clean, CO2-free air from the building. Crazy hey?!

Air conditioning evolution: cooler designs, cooler environment, cooler you.

Remarkable Innovations

Think of some of the remarkable human innovations. What have you thought of? Air conditioning? Probably not (even though you’ve been asked by an air conditioning expert whilst browsing an air con website!)

However, it truly is an outstanding creation that has made living and traveling in the more extreme conditions possible, as well as making life in slightly less comfortable conditions a lot more pleasant.

In places such as Iraq people are used to having environment control, yet recent intermittent losses of this control due to unstable energy sources has led to reactions of great frustration and anger.

Devastating effects on populations can result from heat waves if there are no means of environment cooling. Elderly people in particular are a lot more vulnerable.

Recent heat waves in countries such as France and Greece have seen a number of deaths, and even on our own little island we saw some tragic results from the heat of last summer.

Similarly, deaths in old people have risen in recent years at the other end of the temperature spectrum in winter. Heating the home is very important to enable the elderly to maintain an adequate temperature and stave off the devastating effects of hypothermia.

Fortunately it is air conditioning equipment that can provide the all in one heating and cooling solution for our homes and workplaces. So, despite being low in consciousness on the list of remarkable human innovations, it is air conditioning that has seen us travel to and live in places otherwise impossible, as well as allowing us to live the most comfortable lives we can.

F-Gas Regulation 842/2006

The EU’s F-Gas Regulation No. 842/2006 came into effect in July ’07. F-gases contain the most common form of refrigerant in use today, HFCs. Leakage of these HFCs not only decreases your system’s energy efficiency but it is also harmful to the environment.

Operators bear legal responsibility for your equipment’s compliance with this regulation.

All stationary, hard-wired units must be regularly checked, this is a legally obligation. The frequency of these checks should be determined by the amount of refrigerant in your system: 3kg requires an annual inspection whilst 30kg requires at least 2 per year.

In order to remain within the law, you must:

  • Arrange for leak checks in accordance with a leak checking schedule.
  • Prevent & repair leaks as a matter of due care.
  • Ensure that only certified personnel conduct leakage checks.
  • Maintain records of refrigerants and servicing.
  • Arrange proper recovery by certified personnel during servicing & disposal.
