The History of North London

North London is the name given to all that part of the capital city of England that lies north of the River Thames. This river is a natural boundary that splits the city of London into two parts. North London was designated a sub-region of the city of London in 2004 by the Boundary Commission and consists of the boroughs of Barnet, Haringey and Enfield. In addition to these three suburbs, it also has the boroughs of Camden, Hackney, Westminster, and Islington.

Sometimes the description of the exact parts that the area covers differs depending on the purpose. However, it is safe to assume that it refers to the districts on the northern side of the Thames River. The name is mainly used in relationship to South London.

The region defined as North London is made up of a total land area of approximately 926 square kilometers and an estimated population of 4,721,700, according to some sources. The areas that are referred to with the usage of the term are sometimes stated in the London Plan. This is an official document drawn by the mayor of London for strategic planning of the greater City. Not only does this plan state the boundaries of the city and its sub-regions but it also stipulates on growth.

Speaking about North London brings into mind various organizations, as there are a number of organizations in this region. Key among them is the North London Mosque, the North London Derby (between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal), and the North London School Collegiate. Other important organisations in the region also include the North London Line and the North London Skolars.

The region is home to the University of North London. This is probably one of the oldest institutions in the region as it dates back to 1896 when it started operating as the North Polytechnic Institute. It changed names several times over the years and became the University of North London in 1992, operating under this name for merely 10 years. It now operates as a north campus of the London Metropolitan University.

One of the most recent additions to the social amenities’ landscape of North London is the North London Lions. This is a football club founded in 1990 and is based on Australian rules. The official uniform of the team is a black and red jumper with golden trim, and a custom-made black and gold logo of a lion.
