The History of West London

West London as a sub-region of London was established in 2004 by the London Plan and was amended in February 2008. According to the London Plan, the city is divided into five sub-regions, including West London. Each region is charged with developing its own framework for implementation.

The West London sub-region consists of 7 boroughs namely Brent, Kensington & Chelsea, Ealing, Harrow, Hammersmith & Fulham, Hounslow and Hillingdon. By the year 2001, authorities placed the total population in these areas at 1.6 million with job opportunities for over 900,000 members of the populace. The 2008 amendment to the London Plan added Kensington & Chelsea into the sub-region. The London plan is a policy document that outlines mayoral priorities over a certain period of time. It acknowledges that not only is it better but it is also more efficient to group boroughs together and allow them to plan and develop as a unit.

One of the key establishments in West London is the Heathrow airport. This airport was built in 1944 and is now considered the busiest air transport facility in the whole world. The airport has no less than 6 terminals and is used by at least 100 airlines including the British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. Close to 70 million passengers pass through the airport every year.

The famous Wembley Stadium is located in West London. It is the home stadium of the English national football team. There are three football clubs playing in the English Premier League from West London. These are Chelsea, Fulham and newly promoted Queens Park Rangers. Other smaller clubs such as Brentford of League One also lie in the area. When Chelsea and Fulham come to play each other it is known as the West London Derby.

West London has an extensive land transport system. A cross-rail is being built in the sub-region that will connect the airport and various other locations around. The great western mainline, the A40 trunk road, and A4 road all pass through West London.

Apart from Heathrow, White City is also a great opportunity in the region. This is where BBC television centre is hosted. White city was established in 1908 during that year’s summer Olympics. Opened in 1960, BBC is the largest media station in England.
