Heat Pump

What is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump refers to a tool or a machine which transmits heat at one temperature from one place, often known as the source, to a different place, known as heat sink or sink, at a very different temperature.

A heat pump can be utilised for an array of things. It can be employed to supply cooling or heating. Although, the heat pump regularly gets heated by itself, it still makes use of the exact basic refrigeration cycle to achieve this.

What this means is that a heat pump can apply its coil as both the evaporator and the condenser. This is made possible through the reversal of the valve.

A heat pump can offer both heating and cooling.

For people in cooler weather, the heat pump is mainly designed to supply heating. Some of uses of heat pumps include freezers, refrigerators, reversible cycle heat pumps used for giving building space heating, and air conditioners. In heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) applications, the heat pump is often referred to as a vapour density refrigeration mechanism. This includes heat exchangers and a reversing valve. It is also very imperative to note that heat pumps often draw heat from the ground or from the air.

Heat pumps have the capacity to shift heat energy from one environment to the other. The heat pump brings in heat to an occupied space or takes the heat out. A heat pump works in cooling mode exactly the same way as a conventional air conditioner does. The heat pump makes use of a refrigerant called intermediate fluid. This soaks up the heat from within an occupied space and eliminates the heat to the outer space via the condenser. The refrigerant flows out of the space that needs to be conditioned where the compressor and condenser are situated.

The key component that distinguishes the solo air conditioner from the heat pump is the reversing valve. The reversing valve lets the flow of the refrigerant be redirected. Through this heat can be pumped in either direction. The heat pump can either be in the cooling mode or heating mode. When in the cooling mode, the exterior coil is the condenser and when in the heating mode, the exterior coil becomes the evaporator.
