Cost of a Central Heating Installation

The cost of a central heating installation is an obvious consideration for anyone who needs to upgrade or install a central heating system from scratch. Costs are not always straightforward, but we always endeavour to give you a quotation that is accurate and covers all equipment and labour costs.

The UK central heating market is made up of so many different combinations and types of heating systems and houses, that even giving an approximation is difficult. Firstly, there are many different sources of fuel such as natural gas, oil, LPG (liquid petroleum gas) and electricity.

All fuel types have their advantages and disadvantages and may not be freely available to all houses and locations. Very rural areas for example may not be able to take advantage of natural gas, as there is not a supply. Given the different variables, we have come up with some costs to use as a starting point when considering your new heating system.

Natural Gas

Natural Gas boilers are the most popular in the UK and are available in three different types: combi, regular, and system.

The cheapest boiler to install is a combination. A combi boiler heats hot water on demand and does not require a storage tank in the loft or a hot water tank in an the airing cupboard. The simpler installation of this type of boiler results in reduced labour costs with the usual price ranging from £1,500 to £3,000 for a 1-3 bed property.

For larger properties with more bedrooms and bath rooms the cost increases. A regular boiler or system boiler, which stores hot water, allows for a greater supply of hot water when needed. An example would be if two shower rooms being used at the same time. More complex pipe work will increase costs for this type of property and a typical installation will be £2,500 – £5,000 depending on what is included.

LPG

Many modern boilers can be converted to LPG, which can be a good alternative if you live in a rural area not connected to mains natural gas; an LPG installation is typically more expensive than a standard natural gas system due to the provision of a gas storage tank.

The cost of a Calor LPG tank can be as little as £150 with yearly rental on top of that; however, this will include all the required maintenance and insurance. Taking into account the increased boiler cost and additional tank installation, an LPG central heating installation can cost anything from £2,500 – £6,000 depending on the size of property. Ongoing running costs are higher than natural mains gas but lower than oil.

Heating Oil

Oil boilers are expensive, but extremely efficient. The best of oil boilers are 97% efficient compared to the best natural gas boilers, which are 91.3% efficient. Installation costs are slightly higher as an oil tank is required. Tanks will add £800-900 to the cost. Oil boilers like all boilers need regular servicing. The price for an oil central heating installation is £3,500 – £8,000 depending on requirements.
