We were off to Air Conditioning Elephant and Castle today. It is one of London’s famous boroughs and was cited by Antonio in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. He says, “In the south suburbs, at the Elephant, is best to lodge.” Apparently, Shakespeare would often reference London in his plays possibly because the theatres were in Southwark within this general area. Perhaps “The Elephant” paid him commission for getting punters through the door!

Our job today was a maintenance task to assure an air conditioning system. Without maintenance an air conditioning system can reduce significantly in efficiency which causes an increase in energy usage as well as causing potential harm to components. The performance of the system declines and if neglected for too long, it can break down completely.

Most hotels these days are in competition with other hotels in their category and often the reason why a potential hotel guest will book with one hotel and not another is down to the facilities on offer. Many hotel guests visit the UK and London from all over the world and are used to certain amenities in their home countries and expect to have the same while visiting. One of the things all hotel guests appreciate is air conditioning. Anyone who has ever stayed in a stifling hotel room with the window open a crack will relate to the discomfort of being too hot in a noisy city when they want to rest, especially if their room is facing the sunny side of the street. In surveys of hotel guests the world over air conditioning is one of the facilities that will help them decide where to stay. Many hotel guests would not choose to stay at a non-air-conditioned hotel at all.

Ac Units Decommision In Kensington, London

We come across some unexpected things from time to time when going about our business installing and decommissioning air conditioning systems and on a decommissioning job in Kensington we came across a terrifying looking spider who had clearly decided to make the old air conditioning unit his home. He certainly is not the usual resident you come across in Kensington.

The spider may have travelled from the beautiful Kensington Gardens or indeed from any of the surrounding places in this densely populated area. Kensington has at its heart the High Street which is famous for its shopping and also the Royal Albert Hall famous for playing host to The Proms and other spectacular events.

In one way, we were lucky to find only a spider during the decommissioning in contrast to some of our overseas colleagues who regularly come across everything from snakes to skunks hiding away in the unit!

Decommissioning is something we take very seriously and it can be complex as we have to work in accordance with the correct practices and procedures for decommissioning air conditioning and heat pump devices. We need to work in accordance with current industry standards and regulations using recognised working practices. One of the most important things is to avoid any leaks of refrigerant gases so we work with care. Record keeping and compliance with waste management practices legislation is vital so it is a very big checklist we adhere to because our priority is to ensure everything is managed properly.

While there is no legislation on record on how to deal with spiders in the decommissioning process, we think our six legged friend while upset at losing his cosy nook has probably taken up residence in a neighbouring unit!

There are many myths about air conditioning and this article helps to separate the myths from the reality.

Myth: Air Conditioning is bad for Health

One of the myths about air conditioning is that it is not healthy. The facts are that there are many health benefits associated with air conditioning along with general wellbeing benefits for people and buildings. This article aims to dispel some of the myths surrounding air conditioning and tells the facts as they are about these systems that are part of essential everyday life in many situations.

Often people have been scared by stories that air conditioning systems can cause disease such as Legionnaires disease and other respiratory diseases. This has occurred, but has been tracked down to dirty filters and ill-maintained air conditioning units. A properly maintained air conditioning system will not cause illness. In fact because of the filters and constant new filtered air supplies, bacteria, viruses, and allergens such as pollen and dust are less populated in the atmosphere.

Often sickness is blamed on an air conditioned environment when in fact it is the usual day to day exposure of air borne viruses and bacteria that is the cause. One thing that concerns many users of air conditioning is the running costs, so how to save energy? While air conditioning does use energy, it need not be as costly as you might think. Air conditioning systems these days are economical and built with energy saving functionality to ensure the most efficient operation. It is also important that air conditioning systems are properly maintained by those that use them and of course all systems should be under a regular maintenance schedule by an accredited, professional air conditioning engineer.

Inevitably there are going to be times when energy consumption is high as the air conditioning system works harder during extremes of high temperatures or soup-like humidity. There are steps however that can be taken to ensure that you make the most of your air conditioning and save energy as well. We have come up with this simple list of steps you can take to minimise your energy usage.

Switch off Air Conditioning

This may seem counter intuitive but when you are away from home or your office building, do not leave the air conditioning running if you are going to be away for any length of time. Cooling Towers And Legionella

Cooling Towers

A cooling tower is designed to reject heat. It works by extracting waste heat into the atmosphere by cooling a stream of water to a lower temperature. Simply, it works by means of evaporation. Cooling towers are used where it is necessary to provide much lower water temperatures than can be achieved by air cooled or dry heat rejection apparatus. If you consider occasions where you have seen something rapidly cooled by pouring water on it, you will see how much more quickly cooling is achieved over blowing with cool air. Take an overheated car radiator, it is cooled rapidly by pouring water over the surface and the heat generated by the radiator evaporates the water and cooling is achieved. The cooling effect of a “wet” surface is much greater than a dry one. Another example of this kind of cooling is if you have ever seen a blacksmith working with red hot steel. To cool the metal once it has been shaped, it is plunged into cold water for rapid cooling.

Cooling towers are commonly used to provide cool water for air conditioning systems, especially where land and water are in short supply. Small cooling towers that may be seen on small buildings handle a stream of water of only a few litres per minute whereas large cooling towers for industrial applications such as electricity generation handle thousands upon thousands of litres per minute.

Air enters the cooling tower from the sides and passes through the water stream. As the air passes through the water, a heat exchange takes place and some water evaporates. The evaporated water and heat exit the tower as a fine mist. The water that has been cooled in the process collects at the bottom of the cooling tower and is then pumped back into the cooled water is collected at the bottom of the tower and pumped back to be reused.

Legionnaires Disease

Many people are concerned by the risks of contracting Legionnaires Disease from air conditioning systems that use cooling towers. It has been the case that early outbreaks in recent times were identified as having been acquired from systems of this type.

In 1976, a respiratory disease was contracted by delegates at a convention in Philadelphia. The conference was held by the American Legion of Pennsylvania and the name “Legionnaires’ Disease” was invented. The bacteria causing the disease was isolated and named Legionella pneumophila.

There are around 35 different species of the Legionella bacterium and they are commonly found in wet environments. The bacteria survive for several months and can multiply if algae and other organic matter are present.

Legionnaires’ disease is treatable with antibiotics and is identified by laboratory tests. Work done by scientists on transmission of the disease has revealed that the presence of the Legionella bacterium is normal in soil and water and does not usually cause a disease outbreak. In order to produce disease, the Legionella microbe has to reach the lungs. Inhalation of small particles of soil or contaminated water seems to be the cause although new evidence shows that any fluid and particles going into the lungs by mistake such as during a coughing fit can be enough to allow microbes to enter the lungs. The disease is not transferred from person to person.

Good Engineering Practice and System Maintenance

Prevention of Legionnaire’s disease has been taken very seriously by the engineering profession and the introduction of good engineering and maintenance practices have reduced the threat of the disease. Recommendations include annual inspection and cleaning of evaporative condensers and cooling towers. Maintenance work ensures corroded parts are replaced and any algae and scale accumulation is removed. This process will control the germs and maintain efficiency of the units.

The cooling water is constantly treated with water treatments to ensure the quality of the circulating water. Chlorine and other disinfectants are used which have proven effective in tests.

Best practice for new installations ensure that air intakes are not built close by to cooling towers to avoid any contaminated airborne particles entering the ventilation systems. Air filters will be cleaned, inspected or replaced and tested for leaks. The siting of a cooling tower and the cleaning of hot water tanks are also key to keeping the system contaminant free.

Since the first outbreak of Legionnaire’s disease, every step has been taken to ensure the environment is hostile to the bacteria responsible. All air conditioning engineers will supply the appropriate maintenance tasks periodically to keep a cooling tower system safe.

Inverter AC VS Non Inverter AC

This article aims to explain simply the difference between an inverter and non-inverter AC system and the benefits of each type to help you decide which is best for your own particular air conditioning needs.

To begin to explain the difference between both types, it is first necessary to understand what an inverter is. An inverter is an electronic device that converts direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC). Direct current is an electric current that flows in one direction only. Alternating current reverses direction many times per second. This alternating current is mostly used for power supply.

Non-inverter Air Conditioning

Non-inverter air conditioning units are often known as “fixed” devices because the power supply does not fluctuate and it flows at the same speed. Because of this, the compressor in the system has to continually stop and start to maintain the desired cooling temperature as it is receiving a constant power supply.

The result of this is that non-inverter air conditioning systems waste a lot of energy as the direct current cannot be regulated. This unnecessary usage of the compressor means it will not last as long and will require more regular maintenance and replacement parts. The non-inverter air conditioning system does not have the green credentials of its inverter counterpart.

A non-inverter air conditioning system however is less expensive for the initial outlay and purchase, so may be a good option for areas and spaces that only need to be air conditioned for part of the year. Less regular use in ways counterbalances the extra energy use required.

Inverter Air Conditioning

Inverter AC is more expensive to purchase initially, but the extra investment is worthwhile when looking at long term energy savings across the board. It is also a more attractive option for those businesses and individuals that value products that are energy efficient and environmentally friendly. High performance comes at an affordable price with these systems.

An inverter air conditioning system works by varying the speed of the compressors, due to using alternating current. This allows the system to produce precision cooling or heating delivery when required. Whenever an increase in heating or cooling capacity is needed, high speed operation of the compressor kicks in, increasing refrigerant flow. When weather conditions are clement and cool outside, an inverter air conditioning system will reduce compressor output and regulate the temperature.

Other benefits with an inverter system are up to a 50% decrease in energy costs due to operating efficiency, speed at which optimum temperature is reached and start up time reduction of 30%. Combined with a much quieter operation, inverter systems are very popular, especially as the comfort level is combined with no voltage peaks from the compressor.

As soon as you switch on inverter air conditioning, the compressor immediately begins operating at high speed to cool or heat a space swiftly.

As the desired temperature approaches the thermostatically programmed temperature, the compressor slows and thereafter maintains a constant temperature. Any fluctuations such as occur will be immediately regulated to bring temperature back to set point.
